Main St. in a pasture. The rumor is that two white men killed him, but the city officials back in those days said "a jeolous colored husband killed him." I am curious to know what others may have heard about his murder. He also ran a club named Jasper's Lounge. I hope to hear from anyone. Thanks! [email protected]

source: afrigeneas-digest , Friday, March 12 2004, Volume 08 : Number 042 Date: Wed, 10 Mar 2004 09:49:59 -0600 (CST) From: Tim Pinnick <[email protected]> Subject: African American Coal miners I am seeking information on coal mining and miners of African descent in the United States (and Canada) from the 1800s to around 1930. I am doing extensive research on this topic, and have uncovered evidence of coal miners in over a dozen states from coast to coast. Their places of birth are wide ranging with the highest representation being from the states of Alabama and Virginia. I am sure I am just touching the tip of the iceberg. Recently I created a coal miner website which you can view by following the link below. If you have a coal mining ancestor please send me the particulars, and be sure to visit the site as it has information that may prove helpful in tracking down one of your elusive ancestors. My father was Hardy Stampley from Fayette, Mississippi. He died in 1980 at the age of 59. We live in Michigan. I saw a picture of my grandmother a very long time ago. She was in a rocking chair. That is the only memory I have of her besides the stories my dad once told. He had sisters and brothers too. All deceased now. I was told that his dad fathered upwards of 30 or more children with 2-3 wives. I was told that our great grands were slaves. My dad moved to Chicago from Mississippi, then to Michigan. He had 10 children. My mother is still alive. There are a few Stampley's here in Michigan, some still in Chicago. We lost touch with the Binghams after Clyde Bingham died. One of our cousins married into the Bingham family here in Micigan. Maybe she knows of this woman that you are seeking. [email protected]
