We have a special interest in the Pea Ridge Community of the Conecuh River Township in Covington and Conecuh Counties, Alabama. These areas had a large percentage of mulatto slaves prior to the Civil War. After slavery, these people settled together and married. We descend from the JACKSON surname. Many of our descendants lived in Covington and nearby counties before the Civil War. After the Civil War most Jackson’s continued to live in Covington well into the late 1930’s. Our search also extends to Escambia and Oskaloosa counties in Florida, where many residents from Covington traveled in search of employment, while others went to Mississippi and Mansfield, Ohio. We would love to correspond with others that are researching mulatto families from these areas. Thank you in advance for your invaluable help with our family quest. My grandmother's name was Emma Woodard and she was from Water Valley. She married a Will Miles also from Water Valley. He was a coffin maker. They moved to Memphis and are shown as living on Minegar Ave. in the 1900 census. Then Emma moved from Memphis to Chicago. She died in 1923. She had three daughters, Velma Knight, Ozella Mae Coleman, and Clydie Mae Miles (my mother). I am looking for any relatives in Chicago, and am hoping that the person you know in Chicago may be able to help me pick up on this branch of my family tree. I also know that the family lived at 223 N. Ada in Chicago and there was a Mattie Woodard living there during the 1910 or 1920 census, I forget which one exactly.

    1. Daniel C GILLETT - Hernando Mississippi
    2. tootncmon
    3. Daniel C Gillett(e) was my great-grandfather. He was an AME minister in Hernando, Mississippi, at Oliver's Chapel, starting mid-to-late 1884. I don't know how long he was there. He was still there in 1885, but he was back in Clark County, Arkansas by the 1900 census, and died in 1905. I am looking for any records from Mississippi beyond the articles from the AME newspaper, The Christian Recorder; one from 1884 mentioned him briefly and another from 1885 was from an AME Conference, with a longer mention about him. He was part of the Northern Mississippi Conference. Before 1884, he was in Arkansas, in the South Arkansas Conference. Daniel C Gillett was born in Talladega County, Alabama, in 1842, and "raised in Arkansas." He married in Arkansas in 1866. tootncmon

    2. Ralph Poore
    3. You should try to get your grandfather's military records from the National Archives for the Spanish American War and National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) for World War I. I presume you meant that he served in World War I because his death date is before World War II. For more info on how to order records, go to this link: http://www.archives.gov/research_room/obtain_copies/veterans_service_records .html Since he was about 20 years old for the Spanish American War, your grandfather probably would have had to list his parents' names. You could also check the 1880 U.S. Census for Clarke and Wayne counties (since Shubuta is on the county line they could be living in either one) for a 2-year-old Henry Pinkney Collins living in the household of his father. Check the Meridian newspaper for an obituary and see if the Elks Club has a written history of its founding. It may have a biography of your grandfather. Good luck! Ralph Poore 3440 S.
