The new home for the MS-Ghosttowns list is ready to go. In a few minutes, I'll send out personal invitations to the subscribers of this list who wish to join the new group will be able to do so. I can not add members directly. It should be a link you can click that will let you 'accept' the invitation to join the new group. You may need to check your spam folder as I can't say when such will be delivered. If you don't find an invitation in your email you may also go to this site - https://groups.io/g/MS-GHOSTTOWNS and select Join Group. Folks may continue to post to this list through tomorrow 3/1. Greetings! I am in the process of writing a book on the history of Harrison and Stone Counties and need some help. In my books I always strive for accuracy and as much details as possible to cover the places most people have long forgotten. The following subject has been specifically requested to be included in my book, therefore I am obligated to let no stone go unturned. I hope you will be able to shed some light on the following subject. In Section 5 - page - 24 of the Harrison County Scenic Byway Corridor Management Plan for State Highway 67, dated January 2, 2008, it states: “Orange Grove came about because of the consolidation of smaller settlements. The first settlers were James and Agnes Dale, who purchased land that is now called the Wilson Farm Nurseries. There is a legend that it contains buried treasure placed by a ship captain named Gaiyus Kibby, who took refuge in the area. After settling down, Kibby built a large waterway, known as Kibby’s Ditch, to transport logs to the bayou.” The question now, is where is Kibby’s Ditch today? Here is an extract from my book: One of the early settlers to the Landon area was John and Agnes Dale, who had moved into Harrison County from Perry County. No date has been found as to when they settled there but a deed in Harrison County records shows that on 22 January 1847, the Dales sold 160 acres of land for $450 to Gaiyus Kibby, a sea Captain in coast trade who was actively engaged in business on the coast for twenty years. Icham Reeves was Supervisor of Beat 2 from 1912 to 1915 and was known as “ The Father of Highway 49.” During my research I had run across an item that said Ichom Reeves was considering dredging out a ditch to make a better access to the bayou. It didn't give any other information. But at least it appears to authenticate the fact that there was such a place. There is no information as to the size of Kibby’s Ditch but a local resident now in his 80s remembers fondly the days when he and his friends had may good times in their favorite swimming holes in Kibby’s Ditch floating on logs where Dedeaux Road crosses Flat Branch just east of new highway 49 close to where the VFW Club is today. Another old resident said it passed under Orange Grove Road further to the west. There is no way to determine the original size, but if it floated logs to Bernard Bayou, it surely was a lot bigger than these water courses are today. What a tremendous undertaking that must have been even though it was done with slave labor! We have looked at several maps to try and determine where it was originally. We suspect there was more than one branch or creek widened to transport logs to the bayou and they may have all carried the Kibby name. It is understood that the water tables were higher and these waterways carried a larger volume of water 200 years ago. I would appreciate any help in establishing the true location of Kibby's Ditch along with any stories about it and the legends associated with ship Captain Gaiyus Kibbey. Repeating legends and showing probable proof always adds spice in history books! Did you know that the Lumber mill in Lyman at one time was the largest exporter of lumber iin the Nation, if not the World? The first copies arrived yesterday but will be available on a limited basis. If anyone in interested, please drop me a line at - Leastes2@aol.com The book is priced at my cost to prin of printing and binding. I would be pleased if you would help me pass the word and have people call me or E mail would be better as at 87, I don't hear well on the phone :) Best Regards Roy Eastes USAF MSgt Retired (WWII) 17271 Lowery Rd Gullport, MS 39503
Does anyone have any information as to the name, location, etc. of Trading Posts that once existed in Harrison and/or Hancock Counties in the 1800s? I have heard stories of one such place that was located some where in the vicinity of Bay St Louis and Pass Christian in the late 1800's. It is said that people from the northern area brought produce, skins, furs, live stock there to trade for staple foods. Any information no matter how small will be a appreciated. Best Regards Roy Eastes Lyman,. MS
Leroy, I wish you the best in your compiling your family history! It has been my experience that the library in Pascagoula is a good source. Being that near Gulfport, they are bound to have something on Lyman Community. You have written your letter of inquiry so well that I'm hoping you will gets lots of leads. Good hunting! I am researching and compiling information for a book titled: "The History of the Lyman, MS" - and wish to solicit help from anyone anywhere. For you that are not familiar with the Lyman area, it's located on the north end of Gulfport in the vicinity of Hiways 49 and 53. At one time this was a thriving town, divided into with streets, stores and even a theatre. The center of commerce were saw mills and a center for shipping citrus fruits grown in the area all supported by the Gulf & Ship Island Railroad. I have resided in the Lyman community for over 50 years and well remember some of the old families that are now gone. I wish now I had started this project sooner! As for my qualifications, I have written and published 7 family history books in the past. The Eastes Families of Indiana, The Descendants of John Long Sr. of Maryland (1625-1746), The Descendants of John Molloy from the Isle of Jura Scotland (1726-1804), The Descendants of Elisha Estes of Roane Co., TN, The Ancestors of Elisha Estes of Roane Co.,TN, The Saga of Obadiah Estes/Eastes and The Estes/Eastes Families of America, Our English Roots (1495-1720). This proposed book will not be for sale but placed on CD and given free to Historical repositories and those individuals who are interested. I found long ago that family history books cannot be compiled and published with the thought in mind to sell enough copies to recover expenses. The target population is to small! So, I publish enough copies for my immediate family then put it on CD and give them free to others to read on a computer or print their own. Once printed, it can be bound at places like Office Depot at a reasonable price. I am searching for any information on the early settlement of the Lyman Community. I am particularly interested in stories and pictures of the local businesses, the people and sawmills and the railroads that were used in their support. Also any court records, maps, stories and pictures of the families who lived in the area in the early days. At 87 years, I am home bound and cannot visit the libraries like in the past so and have to rely on on-line resources and the goodwill of friends and neighbors! If anyone has any material that I can borrow to be scanned and returned or suggestions on where information might me located I would appreciate hearing from you. Thanks you so much _mlbjbyrd@msn.com_ (mailto:mlbjbyrd@msn.com) for the infromation. Will make me a copy so I will have the directions when I am back in that area. I don't know if any of my kin are buried there. I can't find the grave of my greatgrandmother Ella Clark Coley MCGrew who died in 1905/06 and buried in MS. Don't think she was in that county. Researching her in Jefferson, Linclon, Adam, Claiborne Counties. Thanks again. Pat **************The year's hottest artists on the red carpet at the Grammy Awards. Go to AOL Music.
