All, My name is Melvin Walters, I am a former resident of Utica, Ms and a novice at genealogy. I have watched the research and postings on this link for many years with great enthusiasm and admiration, as we all appear immensely interested in our MS families. I have a particular interest the families of Lloyds, Cheeks, Killingsworth¹s, Walters and Moody. I desire to find my true roots based on several stories handed down to me by my Great Great Grandfather. My Great Great Grandfather Alex Walters Sr. was born abt. 1860 and was supposedly the son of an overseer Wm Cheeks on a plantation near Red Lick Mississippi owed by Jane Killingsworth born abt. 1783. According to the story, my Great Great Grandfather was the product of Wm Cheeks and a slave named Jane Moody. Jane was later married to another slave that came out of Texas named Banks Moody. I've been able to trace Wm Cheeks born abt. 1825 and Mary Cheeks to that plantation in Jefferson County, Ms., however I have been unable to establish or verify the relationship. Jane Killingsworth¹s probate records suggest that Wm K. Cheeks was her Great nephew and helped to manage her plantation (Holly Grove) while her sons were away during the Civil War. In addition, my investigation has lead me to the 1880 US Census with William R. Cheeks who I believe is actually William K. Cheeks born abt. 1825 and his wife Sara Ann Frances ³Fannie² Cheeks born abt. 1832. It appears that at some point after his first wife (Mary Cheeks) died William assumed the name William K. Cheeks married Fannie and moved to Claiborne County. Wm K. Cheek had two sisters Martha Jane Flowers Cheek and Matilda Cheek, both of whom appear next door to my Great Great Grand father (Alexander Walter) on the 1880 Census. Alex appears in the house hold with several other men working as farm hands for Martha. My story also includes a connection to W. L. Lloyd; of course we know that the Lloyds and Cheeks are related by marriage (William Love Lloyd and Ettie May Cheek married 1884) in addition, there appears to have been a substantial amount of business conducted between the two families as well. Considering that they were neighbors as early as 1870 in Copiah County, I'm attempting to determine if this business relationship extended to the sell and ownership of my Great Great Grand father and his family in 1860. There are numerous unsubstantiated connections between my ancestors, the Cheek¹s, Killingsworths and Lloyd families. If you have any documentation e.g. deeds of property, wills, or bible notations that may contribute to my search please respond to this post via this link or to my personal email at magnoliaman1@verizon.net. My ancestry consists of the following family members. Generation 0 Generation 1 - Alexander Walters abt.1860 Generation 2 - Johnny Walters abt. 1891 Generation 3 - Alex Walters abt. 1921 Generation 4 - Earnestine Walters abt. 1941 Generation 5 - Melvin Walters abt. 1963 Generation 6 - Stephen W. Walters abt. 1991

What family r u researching ? R.O. Brown
HI: I am considering a visit to Wilkinson County to do research in the 1879 period. Specifically I'd like to find out if there are any records related to the lynching of my great-great grandfather in Sept. 1879. I've already been to the state archives in Jackson, with no luck. How should I proceed? Thanks for all help. Kberry **************Get fantasy football with free live scoring. Sign up for FanHouse Fantasy Football today. RE: Index to Campbell's Abstract of Creek Indians and Freedman Census Cards The publication of the Tribal Rolls, in 1907, gave the roll number, name of the allottee, age, sex and blood, and operated to a large extent to inform the public, but this information was not sufficient, in fact, it aided only those who, by reason of their familiarity with the workings and records of the Indian Offices, knew how to secure additional information. I emphasize the words "those who knew how" for this reason: only those who had a working familiarity with the procedure and the records of the Dawes Commission, later the office of the Commissioner to the Five Civilized Tribes, and now the office of the Superintendent of the Five Civilized Tribes, knew what to ask for to advise themselves. An investor from Iowa, Illinois or New York knows nothing of these records. He is shown the roll book, published by the Interior Department, and he takes the information there given as a verity. It did not occur to him to make further investigation, in the office of the Commissioner to the Five Civilized Tribes. If he did think of making further investigation he was given a copy of the census card of the particular allottee in which he was interested. He was told that this was the family card, he was not told that a member of that same family might be found on 1, 2, 5, 10 or 15 other cards, as the case might be. In fact, no one knew of this in each particular instance. Those familiar with the records knew that members of the same family might appear on different cards, but what cards no one knew. The publication Tribal Rolls in 1907, gave roll number, name, age, sex and blood. It did not tell us any family connection. John Q. Public wanting to use these rolls did not have a clue how to research. When asking for a census card of a family member, he was told this is the family card, he was not told that that same family might be found on 1, 2, 5, 10 or 15 other cards. Those familiar with the records knew that members of the same family might appear on different cards, but what cards no one knew. AccessGenealogy has put on line the Index of Campbell's Abstract of Creek Indian Census Cards and Creek Freedman Census Cards. Indian Census http://www.accessgenealogy.com/native/creek/ Freedman Census http://www.accessgenealogy.com/african/freedman/ I can not emphasize enough, please read the Key to Index and Explanatory of the Abstract, these will improve the quality of your search. Here is an example of how these records can help you in your search. Listed below are the records for Cox Indians: On the web page they are listed in alphabetical order, I sorted these to show you the connections. Cox, Annie, 2523. Cox, Louis, 2523. Cox, Maggie, 2523, NB269, NB270, M237. Cox. Nancy, 2523, 3522, NB444. Cox, Burrel, 230. Cox, Isparheeher, 230. Cox, Lydia, 230. Cox, Wm. McKinley, 230. Cox, Cheparnie, 2774. Cox, Culla, 2774. Cox, Kullar, 2774. Cox, Sarah, 2774. Cox, Cooty, 841. Cox, Daniel, 841. Cox, John, 841, 3522. Cox, Lewis, 841. Cox, D. C., 1849. Cox, Jennie, 3633. Cox, Lucy, 1849, 1850. Cox, Lucile, 3522. How to make this work for you. On the index page of the Abstract, there is a search http://www.accessgenealogy.com/native/creek/ Get out a paper and pen, do a search for a family member, Indian or Freedman. Write down that number and any other number that person might have. Other family members listed with the same number may also have additional numbers. Now do a search using the link above, just putting in the number. In the pages that come up, you will have to do a search of each one for the number, use the find feature of your browser. Next take one of your numbers and go here http://www.accessgenealogy.com/native/finalroll.php put in your ancestors name and Creek tribe. This should produce additional information on your ancestor. If you are taken to a new page with a Search for Dawes Cards, all the better, this usually means that Footnote has scanned this packet and put it online. There is a charge to view and copy these records but it is far below the cost from the National Archives, and you will also have the copies today!! You are welcome to pass this on to friends, family and other lists. Thanks Judy
HI: I'm having a very hard time finding out the maiden name of my great-great-grandmother TENER ENOCH of Alamance or Caswell County, North Carolina. Her husband was BEDFORD ENOCH. I know nothing about her, who her family was, nothing except that she married Bedford and had 4 children. I got the death certificate of one of her daughters (1923) and the space for the Maiden Name was filled out as "Unknown." I can't find a death certificate for Tener even though she died in Ohio after 1920. Now that got me to wondering if there were black freedmen who didn't adopt a surname after Emancipation. I am speculating that Tener took her husband's surname when they got married. Is this possible? Let me know your experiences with this, especially with slave women.
