    3. 1. NEWS AND NOTES ------------------ 1a. WAGONS--HO! SPOTLIGHT ON POTTAWATTAMIE COUNTY. As wagon trains arrived in Council Bluffs, the local newspaper -- the "Frontier Chronicle" -- reported the news and included names of the men on the trains and where they came from. If your ancestors were heading west for the California Gold Rush in the spring of 1849, they might have passed through this area and their names might have been recorded. Check the newspaper extracts here in this ongoing project. It is claimed that more people went through Kanesville/Council Bluffs, Iowa on their way west than through St. Joseph and Independence, Missouri combined. http://www.rootsweb.com/~iapottaw/WgnTrnIndx.htm This Web site is part of the IAGenWeb Project and the USGenWeb Project.
