BURIAL SITE FOUND AFTER MORE THAN 100 YEARS by Margaret King [email protected] Ever since I could remember, my mom often told the story of my great-great-grandmother Abbie Maria (HAYWARD) WHITE, my great- grandmother Alma Hayward WHITE, her sister Annie Mason WHITE, and her dad Henry Jarvis WHITE. She often mentioned that my great-great-grandmother and little Annie died of "Mountain Fever" on the train to Chico California. [Eds.' Note: mountain fever or veta or mountain sickness is a condition marked by giddiness, nausea, rapid pulse, and headache due to rarefied air at high altitudes (Source: Jay Yasgur, DICTIONARY OF HOMEOPATHIC MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY, 1992).] One day I took a guess and decided to search RootsWeb for their gravesites. I didn't expect to find anything but I guessed that their burial sites were in Chico, California. Thanks to the helpful search tools I was able to find the name of the county that Chico is in (Buttes County). Then I found the Buttes County Web site that just happened to have a list of the surnames present in the Chico Cemetery. WHITE was one of them. I called the number given and asked where my relatives could be. Paul Thengvall told me "She's here." I cried. I then asked about another baby and he said he would look. A week later I received a letter and my hands were shaking as I opened it. It has been more than 100 years but I now know where they are resting. Thank you, RootsWeb, for making my search easier. * * * -- Chrystie MYERS - ROOTSWEB.COM List Administrator - [email protected] BROOKOVER, COWGER, KRABAL, MOYERS, MYRES, SWECKER
