I would like to add one more tip. If you are lucky, you may find a diary written by someone in the area that mentions your ancestors and little things about their lives. Literate women often kept diaries in the 1800s. I know that some of my ancestors lived in and around Fayette, Mississippi between 1850-75 and was delighted to discover a typewritten copy of Susan Sillers Darden's diary, which is in the Mississippi State Archives. It is filled with information about the Stampleys and Dunbars, and includes many interesting comments about my great, great grandparents and the lives they led.
