Chrystie, I believe I can help you a little with your James Napoleon MYERS. Moyer/Myers lineage- 1.George & Anna Barbara Majer/Mayer/Moyer 1717 Germanna Va. immigrants 2.Christopher Moyer wf. Mary Catharine[Vogt] of Orange/Culpeper/Madison Counties Va. 3. Christopher Moyers wf. Susanna____ b. Culpeper Co. Va lived in the area of what became White Pine, Jefferson Co. Tn. 4. James Moyers b. 1767 in Culpeper Co. Va. &. Mary Blackburn Lived in Jefferson Co. TN. 5. SUSANNA MOYERS b.1796 m. Enoch Willoughby in 1813 5. CHRISTOPHER MOYERS b.1798 m. Sarah McGowan 6. JOHN ALEXANDER MOYERS/MYERS b.30 Aug.1825 in White Pine Tn. m. Nancy Gann .Later moved to Sevier Co. TN. In the answer to your reference question- Here are some things I don't understand. While some elements are true concerning the above family, others are mixed up. " John A. had a ledger that John's father kept. In it he states that his father was from Pa. ( This Moyer/Myers line came from Va. and originally Germany.) Next he states that his father, John ?? was a Lutheran Minister in White Pine in what is now Hamblin Co. TN. ( As far as I can determine, there has never been a Lutheran Church in White Pine. Also, White Pine is in Jefferson Co. not Hamblin Co. ) Next he states that the Rev. John ? his father and a brother of Rev. John came first to Greene Co. TN. and that is where John A. and James Napoleon were born. ( The part of Greene Co. that today is Jefferson Co. is where the above James Moyers who m. Mary Blackburn was born. The only Rev. John Moyers in this early family was James & Mary Blackburn's son John B. Moyers who was born in White Pine. But who was John A. with a father named John who was a ? Lutheran minister. The Rev, John B. Moyers, was a brother to the above Christopher & Susanna, and he did had a son James Alexander b. 1815 but who d. 1819. Chrystie, you state that you found a Nancy and John Myers in the Sevier Co. 1900 census and living with them was a daughter whose name was Chambers. Yes, John Alexander & Nancy Gann had a daughter, Mary Jane who married Samuel Chambers. She was probably a widow at the time. So Chrystie, my conclusion is that the above John Alexander Myers, is the John A of the article in reference to your question from the on-line Sevier Co.courthouse .And would have been a first cousin of James Napoleon if a son of Susanna [ Willoughby]Moyers Evidently, soneone has just mixed up some family genealogy concerning the Rev. John MOYERS. James Napoleon as a son of Susannah [Willoughby] Moyers- At age 17 ( b. 1796) Susannah married Enoch Willoughby in 1813. She had at least one son and a couple of daughters before Enoch took off for Ky. without her. Susannah would have been 43 years of age when James Napoleon was born in 1839. A question - Did she divorce Enoch? Did she remarry a Myers ? Or was James Napoleon a "natural child"? Chrystie, you do have a puzzlement! Nancy
Nancy, I'm so glad you responded and seen "unusual" points regarding this. I was beiginning to think it was me. I too see oddities here. 1 - Would Suzannah MOYERS have been 43 years of age - giving birth to James Napoleon when (if we go according to history) Enoch was already long gone if not deceased? Enoch WILLOUGHBY was tossed out of town during a period when the "Presbyterians" were splitting with their views; during this era these folks were "staunch" believer's of their faith. I did alot of "reading up" on this event. It occured before James N. was even thought about. Maybe Susan kept her family name, shamed by Enoch WILLOUGHBY and his "hot" serman. He was run out of town, leaving her and children behind but I have a problem with the ages and timeframes here. 2 - I backed-up my reading last night for the ump-teenth time and during the "era" below the area of White Pine was Jefferson County, TN and there were only Baptist (Primitive in nature such as Circuit Riders) and Presbyterians' (Rev. Gideon BLACKBURN, etc.) in the area; not Methodist. As well, the bottom tipe-end of Washington County, TN was also split off and made into Greene Co., TN. Sevier County TN came off of Jefferson and all of this occured in 1783 or 93 (read this last night). Wash., Greene Counties were part of North Caroline up until this time and it was NC that handed over this land back to TN. When this occured, the Quakers rolled over the Smoky Mtns. to east TN. One such Quaker family was HAYWORTH'S, of which Noah HAYWORTH, son of one of them mtn migrator's married James Napoleon's wife Margaret C. LINDSEY, after his death in 1894, not before as the letter stated, another descrepancy. 3 - James shows up in (if it's even him) in 1840 Census Jefferson Co., TN as below: Susan MOYERS age 30-40 Clary age 10 Mary E. age 6 James age 1 1850 Census Jefferson Co., TN Susan MYERS age 42 Clary age 19 Mary E. age 16 James age 11 They had a woman named Rhoda living with them in 1840 and she is listed as "Black" and under last name it says NS which I assume means "Negro Slave". That kinda blew-me away because I knew that the majority of TN'S were against slavery and enjoyed and respected their fellow brothers. Also, in the household next to them were a huge black group of various ages that I believe were they're slaves, though they could have been neighbors, the ages are odd to be husband/wife/children. This Susan MOYERS/MYERS didn't live near any of the other MOYERS in the Jefferson Co., TN area; though the rest lived very near one another. 4 - The MOYERS of Jefferson Co., TN were from VA and Germany, so PA confuses me too but, here's what I found on my own. 1880 Census for Sevier Co., TN 6th District shows: James Napoleon MYERS age 41 Margarett age 34 And 8 of the 11 children (last 3 not born yet). Living right up the road is in the 1880 and 1900 Census: John A. MYERS b. April 1828 in TN age 74 Father b. in PA Mother b. in Ireland Wife Nancy b. December 1825 in Boone Co., WVA (old VA) age 74 And the dau I speak of, Mary Jane was m. to Samuel CHAMBER'S brother Andrew "Andy" CHAMBERS! Also, wife Nancy, according to my research was Nancy MILLER, not Nancy GANN. So, is there another James A. MYERS in the same area; same era whom just happens to be married to a Nancy, just like John Alexander MOYERS/MYERS and they both have a daughter married to the same CHAMBERS family? Possibly - yet, probably - maybe yes, maybe not. 5 - I have this John A. MYERS as the son of Steven MYERS b Sep 1798 Wash. Co., PA d Jan 1888 in Stow, OH and Rebecca WALKER b 1797 Georgetown, Hancock Co., VA d. 1879 in Stow, Oh. 6 - John Alexander MOYERS/MYERS wasn't buried in Little Cove Cemetery (old Holly Springs Primitive Baptist Church) in Wears Valley area, was he? Not according to my records. I think they're are (2) families here. And though I find it extremely remarkable that James Napoleon MYERS's children such as Daniel Ray "Mack" MYERS, Andrew Jackson (Big Andy) MYERS as well as my gg Plessie MYERS and his wife Sara Jane MCCLURE are all living nextdoor and accross the road from this John A. MYERS age 74 1900 census Sevier Co., TN and James Napoleon is buried next to him in Little Cove - I believe this confusion is this. Susan MOYERS, later seen as MYERS might not be Suzannah MOYERS, dau o f James David MOYERS and Mary Polly BLACKBURN but another from this Steven MYERS and John A. The MOYERS of Jefferson were Presbyterian; James Napoleon was a Baptist minister of Holly Springs Primitive Baptist Church; a Cuicut Rider; he deeded his land to this church and is buried there. Not Jefferson County where he had ties; not Presbyterian, remembering the staunch belivers. And, if James was truly the James in the 1830 census living with the MOYERS' Susan - was he an "orphan" possiby or from a off branched extension of this line? I wish I could hop a plane, train, etc.. and get down there a break this wall once and for all. If for no other reason, to know who I am. A WILLOUGHBY, a MOYERS, a MYERS, maybe an Alien from Mars. --- Chrystie MYERS - ROOTSWEB.COM List Administrator - [email protected] BROOKOVER, COWGER, KRABAL, MOYERS, MYRES, SWECKER > From: [email protected] > Reply-To: [email protected] > Date: Wed, 21 Mar 2001 22:25:15 EST > To: [email protected] > Subject: [MOYERS] James Napoleon MYERS > Resent-From: [email protected] > Resent-Date: Wed, 21 Mar 2001 20:25:21 -0700 > > Chrystie, > I believe I can help you a little with your James Napoleon MYERS. > > Moyer/Myers lineage- > 1.George & Anna Barbara Majer/Mayer/Moyer 1717 Germanna Va. immigrants > 2.Christopher Moyer wf.
