Hi all, Yesterday, I took a drive up to Thurmont, Frederick County, Maryland. It's a location that is right on the very foothill (literally) of the Catacin Mountain. This town used to be called "Mechanicstown" as early as 1811, but was established in the 1700's. It's 3 miles NW of Creagerstown, and about 7 miles NW of Frederick-Town, Maryland. It's known to be part of the "Old Monocacy River" settlement and if anyone tries to tell you different, send them my way! Old Monocacy Settlement was the entire "watershed" area, from PA own down thru Frederick and Carroll County, MD. Sourcing the Frederick County historians that wrote the book on it, literally. Within this area is where at least 3 MYER MIER MOYER lines have come out of, that I've found thus far with guidance from the Frederick County Historical and Genealogical Societies and I live in MD and have followed these lines for eons now. Their surname has been seen and spelled as MEYER MIER MEIER MOYER MOYERS, but the original spelling for 2 out of the 3 was MAJER and MAYER. "S" was added "here". Within the township of Thurmont (where President BUSH is known to dine but this kid didn't get to see our Commander and Chief) is an old Quaker settlement area. It was where a Peter APPELL, spelled APPLE by the time his son Peter JR. APPLE's surname was seen in documentation, bought (1st) 100 acres, later he purchased more growing to almost 300 acres (can't remember the exact number but it's on my newly created page out here). It's very near Camp David and the Grottos, too. Now, at the Church and Cemetery (read about the history on my website) known as Jacob's, later Apple Church and Cemetery I found at least 4 MOYER(S). There were tons of tombstones but they desperately need to be cleaned from the lime build-up. Crusty stuff, you know. Next time I go I'm going to take cleaning items with me and do it myself, but other than that, it's a very well maintained site. The log cabin original church was on the site in the very early 1700's, and the one you'll see now is I think 1838 or so. Check it out (I did the best I could w/the digital memory allowed in my old camera) at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~chrystiem/albums/md/frederick/apple cemetery/ and please, enjoy! I'm going back! I loved it. I could call it home. The views were awesome, valleys, mountains, etc... But I kept thinking that if the big one goes off (you know what I mean) I'd be the first to go... But in style, no less! -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Chrystie MYERS, ROOTSWEB LIST ADMINISTRATOR BROOKOVER - KRABAL - MOYERS LIST NEWSGROUPS MYERS GENEALOGY http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~chrystiem/ -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --
