Our Surname - Variations and Meanings >From records found at the Westminster Library, Carroll County, Maryland *In no way do I necessarily agree with the below statements. MOYERS MYERS SURNAME VARIATIONS MEYER - German, from the Old High German MEIER meaning "Tenant Farmer" orone who oeversee's tenant farmers. MEIER - German, meaning a "Steward" or "Supervisor". MAYER - French, (Old French) meaning "Cutter or Sellerof Hoop Poles" (don't ask)... there are other variations of this spelling such as: MAYEUR meaning "MAYOR" or "Squire". I have seen this spelled also as MAHER(S) and MIER(S) as well as MEYER(S) but my research shows that the MAYER'S, orginally spelled as MAJOR and MAJER (European dialect dictates their nouns, verbs, etc.. differently then as described and/or spelled in English); One line of MAYER'S that I've studied extensively here in Maryland and PA have proved records dating back the 1400's from the old Imperial City of Ulm in Wurtemburg, German); this line was of actually blood lined to the Swedish and Swiss - German ancestry). MOYER - Irish, an anglicized form of the Irish name MAC AN MAOR meaning "son of the Steward" and very similar in orgin to the Scottish surname of MAC NAIR. *Again, I have found that MOYER has many different origins; from German spelled as above MAJER; later MAYER to MOYER once this line arrived in Germanna, VA - also I personally have seen the same lines spelled as MUIR, MOIUR etc. MYHRE - Norweigian, from the old Norse MYRR meaning "Dweller at the Swamp". (Probably where my line stems from ;) Often anglicized to MYER. (Oh great). MYERS (1) - English, meaning "from or at the time of the Mire" - shows up in America 1800 on. MYRES - * this is my observation - I believe that either the census takers wrote MYERS MIRES and MEYERS as it sounded ca1840 on in the southern areas of the US; and could be a variation of surnames previously mentioned in above sentence. MYERS (2) - Hebrew from MEIR and MEOR meaing "Light or Luminary" and I agree totally with this. Alot of MYERS have Jewish ancestry - I know that some, fearing scrutiny wished to remain "un-orthodoxed" to their heritage. Sad. MIRE - English again stemming from "Old French" meaning "Doctor".
