    1. [MOYERS] RE: MEYER Bk - 3
    2. chrystiem
    3. Since the name MEYER is spelled in so many different ways by different members of this numerous family, that among the emigrant ship lists on file at Harrisburg, PA it is never found written MOYER rather more frequently written MEYER, as in old deeds and other signed papers dating back from 100-150 years ago (starting at 1890) whereas it's seen as MEYER or MAYER. However, in records at Harrisburg, PA and other places where clerks and officials wrote the surname in their own handwriting it is seen as: MEYER, MYER, MEYERS, MYERS, MIRE, MEIER, MEIR, MAYER and MOYER. These ancestors wrote German and spelled their name as MEHER, americanized as MEYER which the writer claims he adopted for this book. *So it is safe to assume that though many historical documents used as sources had the surname spelled in the many different ways as I've stated above, the writer of this particular book and lineages has decided to stay within the one spelling of MEYER, to keep it simple. Pg. 10 Our ancestor MEYER, whom settled in America came from the Palatinate, Prussia. No proof whatsoever can be found of his first name, though elder family members from different branches recall it to be "Christopher", the writer believed's his name was Henry for reasons to which he explains. The writer's name is Henry MEYER. He is the son of Henry MEYER born 1795 - died 1881. His father Henry claimed his father the immigrant to be Christopher; an Hon. Jacob G. MEYER of Aaronsburg, PA believed this to be true as well, but the writer is adament in his opionion that from the many land tract documents and immigration papers that his grandfather the immigrant's first name was "Henry". *I find it strange that 3 generations of HENRY MEYER"S wouldn't know that they were named after their father or grandfather as tosay you do not know if you are a Junior or a "3rd", something that I would assume would be important hand-me-down common familylore. But, the writer has alot of substantial proof to back up his theory, which will follow shortly. Though not much is known of the immigrant MEYER while in America and even less abt him historically from Europe. Hon. Jacob G. MEYER, whom the writer refers to quiet frequently is a cousin to the writer. Maj. John MEYER, of Rebersburg, PA whom often stated that his uncle, Philip MEYER was grandson of the MEYER from Germany. That there were 2 brothers that came with their grandfather MEYER suggesting "3" brother immigrants. Apparently after arrival 2 daughters were born to the immigrant MEYER grandfather. That both of these daughters migrated out of PA, one migrated to South Carolina - unsure of the other. One brother didn't like this country, returning to the old country never to be heard from again. That leaves the 2 brother's, both settling in PA but one of the two (possibly) leaving for a NC settlement, eventually. Samuel MEYER of IOWA, son of above mentioned Philip states that he was always told that 3 brothers came together, 2 settled in PA, one left never to be heard from again. 2 seperate tracts of land were taken at the old MEYER settlement "MUHLBACH" of Lebanon Co., PA. 1 by John MEYER and another by Henry MEYER; both tracts adjoined one another adding to the theory that these 2 were brothers. more to follow....
