    2. Chrystie Myers
    3. Virginia Old Churches, Vol. 2 Old Churches Ministers, and Families of Virginia. No. IV. A very few Scotch and Irish names are found in this list,--still more of Welsh; but the great body of them are English or British, (other than Saxon.) *[* Welsh Names to be found in the United States and many of them in Virginia. Atkins, Adams, Apjohn, Apthorp, Aubrey. Balch, Barlow, Bayly, Benlow, Bevan, Bowen, Boydell, Breese, Broadus, (Broadhurst,) Broughton, Bulkley. Cadwallader, Catesby, Clements, Cloyd, Conway, Coates, Cobbs, Cerwin, Craddock, (Caradoc,) Crute, (Crwt,) Cunliffe. Davis, Davies, Dawkins, Denby, Dickins, Dickinson, Dewey. Edmunds, Edwards, Evans. Fane, Fielding, Floyd, Fluellen. Garland, Gerald, Glyn, Godwin, Griffin, Griffith, Gwathney, Gwillyn Gwynn, Gwinnett, Graves. Hawkins, Hanmer, Harris, Haskins, Hawkins, Havard, Haynes, Hopkins Hoskins, Herbert, Hickes, Holland, Howell, Howland, Hughes, Humphreys, Hurst, Jenyns, Jenkyns, Judkins, Junkin, Jeffreys, Jefferson, Jacobs, James, Jones, Johnes, Isaacs. Langhorn, Leigh, Lewis, Lewellyn, Lister, Lloyd, Ludlow, Lyman. Maddock, (Madoc,) Matthews, Mansel, Meredith, Meyrick or Merrick, Morgan, Miles, Morris, Morse, Mosby, Mostyn, Middleton. Nichols, Norris, Nevin or Nevins. Owen, Owens. Pannill, Par, Parry, Parkins, Perkins, Perkinson, Peacock, Peters, Penn, Pendergast, Pennant, Pickens, Phillips, Poole, Polwhell, Powell, Powys, Price, Pratt, Prichard, Pugh, Pym. Richards, Rees or Reece, Rice, Rivers, Rowland, Roberts, Rogers, Ragland. Stokes, Stanley, Stephens, Shelby, Simonds or Simmons, Snowden, Thomas, Tompkins, Trevelyan, Trevor, Tudor, Tyndale or Tindall. Vane or Fane, Vaughn. Watkins or Gwatkin, Williams, Winn, Wilkins, Wilkinson, Watts, Walters or Waters, Wills, Willis, Wallis, Wall, Warner, Wayles, Wilks, Womack, Wootan, Wayne. 1. The following surnames are taken from those of the ancient princes of the country:--Cadwallader, Griffin, Gwynnett, (Gwynnedd,) Craddock, (Caradoc,) Howell, Lewellyn, Madoc, Owen, Rice, (Rhuys,) Tudor, (Tewdor.) 2. These by adding "s" to Scripture names,--viz.:Adams, Daniels, Davies, (Davids,) Ellis, (Elias,) Johnes or Jones, James, Isaacs, Jacobs, Matthews, Phillips, Stephens, Symonds, Peters, Thomas. 3. And these by adding "s" to common Christian names:--Clements, Edmunds, Edwards, Evans, Hughes, Humphreys, Jeffreys, (Geoffreys,) Richards, Roberts, Rowlands, Wills, Williams, Watts, Walters. 4. "Ap" or "ab" means son, and is often prefixed to other names; and the affix "kins" denotes a collateral relation: thus, Bevan is equivalent to Ap-Evan; Bowen, Ap-Owen; Breese, Ap-Rees; Parry, Ap-Harry; Powell, Ap-Howell; Pugh, Ap-Hugh; Price, Ap-Rice; Prichard, Ap-Richard; Penry, Ap-Henry. Atkins,(Arthurs'-kin,) Dickens-son, Dawkins, Haskins, Hawkins, Hopkins, Jenkins, Judkins, (Judas-kin,) Pickens, Perkins-son, Tomkins, Watkins, Wilkins. 5. Some of the above names may be Cornish, old British, or otherwise Celtic, rather than strictly Welsh; thus, the English have a proverb,-- "By Tre, Pol, and Pen You may know the Cornish men." 6. It is curious to note how many of the original Puritans of New England, of the Quakers of Pennsylvania, of the Baptists of Virginia and elsewhere, of advocates of extreme republican opinions in matters of State, as well as of Revolutionary leaders, bore names to be found in the above list. Of very many of the citizens of the Piedmont district, in Virginia, the same may be said. Their ancestors may have been attracted thither from its resemblance to the Principality in its physical features.] -- Chrystie MYERS List Administrator at [email protected] SWECKER BROOKOVER MOYERS MYRES KRABAL COWGER

    1. [MOYERS] Re: Other Variations of our SURNAME
    2. Chrystie Myers
    3. Here's a few more for all of you MYERS and MOYER(S). MUIR MUHER MOIER MOYAR MOHAR MUHIER MULUIER MULUER Remember, think german, irish, scotch, jewish, english, and I'm sure french and Indian dialect with "italic's" and "alphabet's" that were used differently, Even our vowels were used differently in reading and writing, as well as pronounciation too! And if that's not enough for you, just think that our ancestor's probably arrived here not understanding the new world or it's language (oh the barriers they were up against) to begin with and depending on where they arrived depended on how the "record taker" comprehended the "surname" pronounciation that came out of our ancestors poor mouths. VA - probably a germannia colony. SC - surely Scotch-Irish and even if they did come in through MD or PA which would have been staunch Mennonite and/or Amish they still might have migrated to SC or VA which made up for some parts of PA, OH, WV. And the French and Britsh, Indians and so many different fractions of immigrants - no wonder they spellling is so different - well, there you go - I now have that surname variation headache again;) And the French were all over this country too especially in the southern ports. Pioneers!?! Must be a better word then that. Doubt we could or would sustain this today. -- Chrystie MYERS List Administrator at [email protected] SWECKER BROOKOVER MOYERS MYRES KRABAL COWGER

    2. Chrystie Myers
    3. Let me remind everyone that I've now uploaded the ".txt" (text) file to my website where I'll be periodically (when time allows) uploading the "Genealogy of the MEYER Family - by Henry MEYER 1890" for all to download and print-out with wondeful thanks to Gary MYERS of OH whom was so kind and gracious to send a coppy of the book to me. He has given me permission to reprint this old gem. There is alot of mention in the beginning regarding how his ancestors and current family used many different variation's of the surname MEYER from MIER to MOYER, MYRES and MAYER and states that MAHER was the orginal spelling. You'll find the the text at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~chrystiem/meyerbook.txt and if that does not work just goto my mainsite at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~chrystiem/myersfam.html and look for the link to the MEYER BOOK - (which is in no way near finished) but bookmark the site and check back weekly as I'll do my very best to continue typing the book til it's there for all to read - very very interesting lineage. I'm forwarding the MEYER BOOK to all of the newsgroups above because my personal lineage shows that the BROOKOVER'S COWGER and SWECKERS married into MYERS in old VA, now WV ca 1750-1880 and thought it would be of interest to all. -- Chrystie MYERS List Administrator at [email protected] SWECKER BROOKOVER MOYERS MYRES KRABAL COWGER
