NEWSPAPER RESEARCH by Homer Thiel, Tucson, Arizona [email protected] Newspaper research is an often underutilized part of family history research. Many researchers limit their newspaper research to locating obituaries or perhaps announcements of marriages or anniversaries. This is often the case because newspapers can be difficult to locate, may not be available on microfilm or through interlibrary loan, and are usually not indexed or are incompletely indexed. Many researchers forego newspaper research because they don't have the time to read through hundreds of pages of text to find the occasional mention or story about their family. I have a strong belief that it is important to help make such virtually inaccessible records available for research. To do my part, I have been transcribing local news from a Traverse City, Michigan newspaper, the GRAND TRAVERSE HERALD, and placing the transcriptions online on my free RootsWeb site over the last few years. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jayhomer/Records.htm There are many important stories lost in the pages of newspapers: discussions of everyday life, notes about family visits, and descriptions of local social events. Together, these add life to family history. I encourage others to think about completing similar transcriptions. Even transcribing a few issues and posting them on RootsWeb will help researchers now and in the future to explore their past. -- Chrystie MYERS - ROOTSWEB.COM List Administrator - [email protected] BROOKOVER, COWGER, KRABAL, MOYERS, MYRES, SWECKER
Hi all, Well, Rootsweb is finally back online. They merged with Ancestry.com. Let's hope Rootsweb stays "free". If not, I'll find us another way to keep our newsgroups running with another online "free" genealogy site. Have to remember where we all left off. I'll send everyone all I can find regarding our lines. Welcome back! -- Chrystie MYERS - ROOTSWEB.COM List Administrator - [email protected] BROOKOVER, COWGER, KRABAL, MOYERS, MYRES, SWECKER

Enjoy! =================================================================== DATABASES OF THE DAY (Free for 10 Days!) =================================================================== U.K. AND U.S. DIRECTORIES, 1680-1830 (Update) This database was originally published under the name "Biography Database, 1680-1830," but Ancestry.com has renamed it online to help researchers better understand what it contains. The database is actually a massive collection of U.K. and U.S. biographical records, directories, and lists from the following sources: --- National, town, and trade directories of the United Kingdom and United States --- All known book subscription lists --- All birth, marriage, death, promotions, and bankruptcies from a number of regular journals, including the "Gentleman's Magazine" from its inception in 1731 to 1870 --- All extant society membership lists from the period --- A number of miscellaneous additional biographical sources contributed by individual academics, who consulted for the project. The database makes available biographical sources that were previously too large and too dispersed for practical consultation. It also lets genealogists trace some individuals and families from birth to death, including everything in between, such as marriage, work, reading interests, offices, children, and social groups. The entire data collection will be distributed in five installments, which together provide information on more than 5 million individuals. A new installment is published each year, with the most recent being the third set or CD, which the database has just been updated to include. This database now represents the first three installments, which encompass more than 2.5 millions names. Source Information: Ancestry.com. "U.K. and U.S. Directories, 1680- 1830." The surviving fragments consist of 1,233 pages or pieces, including enumerations for fragments of Alabama, the District of Columbia, Georgia, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, South Dakota, and Texas. The records of only 6,160 of the 62,979,766 people enumerated survived the fire. The original 1890 census enumerated people differently than ever before that time. Each family was enumerated on a separate sheet of paper. 1890 was the only year this was done. Source Information: Ancestry.com. "1890 U.S. Federal Census Fragment."
