    1. [MOYERS] Sketches of Tennessee's Pioneer Baptist Preachers
    2. There must have been many different factions of the Baptist in the early 1800's. Continuing from the same book "Sketches of..." "The first introductory sermon before the Hiwassee Association (1824 one year after its organization) was preached by Elder George Snider. The same year he was chosen Moderator of that body, and served in that capacity as long as the body had an existence, some five or six years. He was Moderator of the Convention (1830) which created the "Sweetwater United Baptist Association,'" and served as Moderator of the new body from fourteen to sixteen years--up to within a year of his death. When the Association divided (1837) on the question of missions, ....." In my earlier post I should have stated that George Snider moved to Monroe County, Tennessee which was a part of the "Hiwassee Purchase." He was born in Shenandoah County, Virginia, January 1, 1769. "In 1797 he professed a hope in Christ and united with the Presbyterians, in which connection he continued about fifteen years, leading a pious and consistent life. He had never studied the question of baptism, however, and upon a careful examination of that question he joined the Baptist Church at Miller's Cove, and was baptized, June 27, 1812, by Elijah Rogers." I hope this is of value to someone on the list. Dianna

    2. Chrystie, I don't think that the American Baptist is the same denomination as the Myers. If you know anyone in Nashville, have them take a look into the Baptist Headquarters. They have scads about different Baptist denominations. Comparing a Southern Baptist to a Primitive Baptist is as different as being Roman Catholic as compared to Russian Orthodox. Bobbye

    3. My James MYERS was not born until 1839 but I'm still trying to find his father, though I'm pretty sure he wasn't from this planet. But Hiawassee Georgia, now in Towns County is right on the GA / TN border. Wow. I don't have that book - you say that's abot all it writes of? I know that the SNIDERS, seen spelled by 1850 as SNYDER'S came in from PA; hey, they make great pretzels;) And they're orginal heritage was PA Dutch. -- Chrystie MYERS - ROOTSWEB.COM List Administrator - [email protected] BROOKOVER, COWGER, KRABAL, MOYERS, MYRES, SWECKER > From: [email protected] > Reply-To: [email protected] > Date: Sat, 14 Apr 2001 06:51:13 EDT > To: [email protected] > Subject: Re: [MOYERS] RE: The American Baptist Historical Society > Resent-From: [email protected] > Resent-Date: Sat, 14 Apr 2001 04:51:25 -0600 > > Christy, > Do you have the book, "Sketches of Tennessee's Pioneer Baptist > Preachers?" I've seen them too! Wish me luck and I'll chat with all of you soon. P.S. I found loads more of MYERS related old photos from the Library of Congress. Tomorrow night, I'm going to place a linked page to my site where you guys can click on link taking you right to the picture in its full size. Download and print them out. 2. Christy, Do you have the book, "Sketches of Tennessee's Pioneer Baptist Preachers?" I looked in the index for Julius and did not find him. However, there is a James Myers listed in the sketch about Georgia Snider. It does not say much about James except as follows: George Snider moved in the fall of 1821 to Monroe County, and settled on a beautiful farm in the "Hiwassee Purchase. Here he spent the remainder of his life, serving as pastor, for many years, Hopewell, Big Creek, Chestua, and Tellico churches, the last named becoming the Madisonville Church, March, fourth Saturday, 1828, having the recognition of the "presbytery, Elders George Snider and James Myers........" 3. Thus far, from the Library of Congress; while searching thru over 12 billion digital text files they've put online so far this is what I have found when I did a simple search for "Julius MEYER". Native American portraits LC Control Number: 91482651 Type of Material: Photograph, Print, Drawing (Collection) Brief Description: Native American portraits [graphic]. 1865-1880. 5 photoprints on cards : albumen ; 9 x 5 cm. or smaller. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ CALL NUMBER: LOT 12960 (F) -- Request in: Prints & Photographs Reading Room (Madison, LM337) -- Status: Not Charged I'm figuring out that the Library of Congress has in it's holdings at least a hundred or more photo's taken in what I believe was Julius MEYERS / MYERS (seen spelled both ways) Photography Studio located in Denver, Colorado during the 1860-1886 or so. He apparently took many pictures of the Indians in that area; especially enjoying posing with them. Either he or his descendants donated them to the Library for historical purposes. Reading a bit futher, there are "Call Numbers" and statements that suggest that anyone can order copies as a loan; or view them at the library freely. But who was he? I'll continue my search but my eyes are rolling backwards. Another exciting Friday night... again i'll be searching at the Westminster Library, very near the PA border in Amish Country here in Maryland tomorrow. Will keep the old Jacob MOYER/MYERS/MEYER eye open. good night folks. -- Chrystie MYERS - ROOTSWEB.COM List Administrator - [email protected] BROOKOVER, COWGER, KRABAL, MOYERS, MYRES, SWECKER

    3. Need you guys in court with me when that dreaded day comes! Thanks for the support Bobbye. Now, about that Indian blood.... Sitting Bull... hmmmmm... My first guess is that he was probably a Scout, something that I was told was somewhere far back in my MYERS in the TN/VA/KY regions. Story goes that this MYERS, who spelled his name differently in the mid 1800's did all that he could to help the Indians when the above mentioned areas held the Cherokee Nations (they also took in the Chocsaw's under their nation); as far back as ca 1786 their land was being sold out from under them to awaiting pioneer settlers in NC whom came down the Cumberland Gap - east side of the Appalachians hoping to grabup those cheap landtracts. But technically/legally they couldn't take the land til the Indians were treatied out of there; some pioneers didn't wait and pushed on anyway into TN/GA. This area was then knows as either "Land south of OHIO" and/or "Mississippi Territory" but it changed every two years; just as NC owned alot of what is now East TN; handing the land back to TN; then switching again. No wonder it's hard to figure out where the records are - alot was burned behind to cover up land deeds, etc... Gives me a tendency to believe that one reason our ancestors spelled their names differently was to avoid being caught up in bad land buying. I'm sure a few wanted annoymity or however that word is spelled. <--- can't spell! -- Chrystie MYERS - ROOTSWEB.COM List Administrator - [email protected] BROOKOVER, COWGER, KRABAL, MOYERS, MYRES, SWECKER

    3. i think what you are looking for and what you may be asking for you will get negative answers. how about trying asking them where do the record books of churches that just close their doors...where are athey sent. they may think that you are asking for research materials and the materials i found are not research materials, just churches that have had to close because of lack of funds etc. or there is just not enough people to keep the church doors open. these records here in texas go to the seminary such as the larissa church that closed. the books were sent to ft. worth seminary. i found so much material over there i could not afford to copy it all. blessings, helen.

    3. the old Salem baptize church of Christ in larissa, Texas, right outside of the town of Ballard and very close to mount Selma, Texas....or half way between Tyler and Jacksonville on the old Jacksonville highway or old 69. we have a new 69 which is wonderful but old 69 goes from Tyler, Gresham, flint, Mt. Selma, and then Jacksonville, Texas. old larissa use to be a college town but that left many years ago. the old Salem Baptist church of Christ is no longer there, but the cemetery is there. that is the one that I have shed so many tears over. where David hadean Myers is buried. it is in such bad shape...many of the stones were put on a truck and sent somewhere to be dumped in a river. they think that president Taylor's brother is buried there but no one knows for sure. the church was started in 1849 but they started record keeping in about 1855 I believe (from memory). need anymore info, will try and get it for you. blessings, Helen.
