    3. Thomas, Honestly, there were 2 families, MOYERS and MYERS that traveled from PA, thru Winchester, VA in the mid to late 1700's and on in to the Civil War era. While passing thru Winchester this past summer (twice) I traveled several miles down Route 11 to a town called Stephens City; very old and historical town that old pioneer settlers stayed - some for short periods while they had their supplies replenished and their wagons fixed and others choose to live there for 1 to 4 generations or so. Both of these lines did come in from PA down Rt 11. Some did endup in OHIO; others in upper VA, now Tyler/Wetzel Co., VA; and some straggled down into KY TN NC etc... There is a house that stiill stands from the early 1800's and it's called Jane MYERS house. Her house is always on my mind because I was suppose to get back up there to do more research but my hands have/are giving me a fit/surgeries etc... so it will have to wait until next year sometime. The MOYERS spelled their names as such on old land platts but as MYERS on tombstones;the MYERS were the same. Probably the town recordmakers/takers wrote it "however". You might want to check into this area for Jane. I have a photo on my website of her home. It's a brown 2floor boxed type, the usual older type house. It's registered at Stephens City Historical Society where they surely can give you more info on her and her line. I think the link to my site is http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~chrystiem/albums/stephenscity/ if not, try link below my name at bottom of this email - look for Virtual Cemeteries/Town Tours. The book lists this line as Moyer although the tombstones say Moyers, but that is not unusual in this family. :-) Henry S. Moyers' father was Henry W. "Red Henry" Moyers whose father was George Moyer/Moyers who was my 2nd Great Grand uncle which makes you and I cousins, though far removed. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/HU2.2ACIB/211 Message Board Post: I have seen in several lines that the father of 1752 Peter b. in Berks Co. was Peter on the 1741 SNOW MOLLY. Does someone have information to substantiate this? Below are some other Peters on ships with German and Swiss immigrants to Philadelphia at about the same time. There were also a great number of men with the single name Johan or Johann, which according to German naming customs, were not their given (middle) names (only Johannes was). So, any of the ones with only a Johan or Johann (or Hans, etc.) could have been named Peter. Ships to Philadelphia from Sep 1727 - Oct 1749 20 Sep 1738 NANCY - Martin PETER Meyer, Henry Meyer, Christop Meyer, Jacob Meyer, Johann Meyer, Joseph Meyer, Hans Michael Meyer 27 Aug 1739 BETSEY - Johan PETER Meyer 26 Oct 1741 SNOW MOLLY - PETER Meyer 8 Oct 1744 AURORA - Johan PETER Meyer, Matteas Meyer, Matteas Meyer Jr., Nichlas Meyer, Johan Adam Meyer 22 Dec. 1744 MASCLIFFE - PETER Meyer, Johan Jacob Meyer, Michael Meyer Also, according to German naming customs, the first son was named after the father's father, the second after the mother's father and the third after the father. Since 1752 Peter named his first son George, perhaps we should be looking for an immigrant George as 1752 Peter's father.

    3. MAP SEARCHING TIP I recently used the new Scandinavian database at our local family history library and was very pleased to find a Danish ancestor. With the records, I was able to determine where he was from. Then I went searching for a map of the location. I did not have much success with the online maps I found. Then I realized I should be searching for a parish, not necessarily the town. I went online and typed in a search for Danish parish map and was very pleased to find the maps I needed. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Flats/9991/index.html In doing so I was able to see that my ancestors were from three connecting parishes. From there I was able to look at a standard map and locate the town closest to the three parishes. ILLINOIS STATE GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY HAS A NEW WEB ADDRESS The Illinois State Genealogical Society has moved its Web site to http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilsgs/index.html Here you'll find all the same great stuff that was available at the old site, including information about the society, special projects, publications, guides to Illinois resources, and databases. Databases include: --- Marriages in IL to 1900 --- Cemeteries in Illinois by County: A Location Guide --- Latest List of Prairie Pioneers --- Surnames Found in Vol. 2 of "Family Bible Records" --- Quarterly Index --- 1880 U. S. Census: New York Juvenile Asylum, New York, NY --- 1880 U. S. Census: Juvenile Asylum, House of Reception, 61 W. 13th St., New York, NY ___________________________________________________________________ GEORGIA STATE ARCHIVES CHANGES HOURS Beginning 1 January 2002, the State Archives of Georgia will be open to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. The State Archives will be closed to the public on Mondays. WHY IS THE STATE ARCHIVES CHANGING ITS HOURS? On 31 October, the State Archives broke ground for a new building just outside the campus of Clayton College and State University in Morrow. Construction is expected to take eighteen to twenty months. During that time, we must prepare the entire Archives collection for the move to Clayton County. Many records must be re-boxed, and shelves and boxes must be cleaned, inventory data of all the records must be entered and verified, and many details of the move must be planned and tested in pilot projects. The change in our hours will allow the staff to work as teams and concentrate more attention on these activities, particularly on Mondays. WILL THE PUBLIC BENEFIT FROM THE CHANGE IN HOURS? As soon as the hours go into effect the public will see several immediate benefits: longer Saturday hours, increased access to the original records, and standardized hours in the Main Research Room and the Original Documents Reading Area throughout the week. In addition, we will now pull original records on Saturdays, so patrons will no longer need to request these records the day before. Will the State Archives change its hours again when it moves to the new building? After the move, the State Archives intends to add evening hours to the times it is open to the public. We will continue to devote Mondays to team projects and staff training that will result in the best customer service possible. WHERE IS MORROW? Morrow is located 15 miles south of downtown Atlanta on Interstate 75 at Exit 233. For more information, please visit the official Web site of the city: http://www.cityofmorrow.com FOR MORE INFORMATION: Contact Pamela Coleman at 404-651-6474, at mailto:pcoleman@sos.state.ga.us, or visit our Web site at http://www.GeorgiaArchives.org -- Chrystie MYERS - Rootsweb List & Ancestry.com's Board Administrator MOYERS MYRES MAYERS MAJOR COWGER BROOKOVER KRABAL SWECKER MYERS HOMESTEAD - http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~chrystiem/

    3. Latin terms As you read older records, you may come across some Latin terms. Below is a list of commonly used Latin words. If the word that you have come across is not in this list, try consulting a Latin dictionary. Anno Domini (A.D.) - in the year of our Lord circa, circiter (c., ca., circ.) - about connubium - marriage et - and, both et alii (et al.) - and others et cetera (etc., &ampc.) - and so forth familia - household filiam - daughter filium - son item - also, likewise mater - mother materfamilias - (female) head of household mensis (menses) - month(s) nepos - grandson. Also meant "nephew" in some records. neptis - granddaughter. Also meant "niece" in some records. nota bene (N.B.) - take note obit - (he or she) died obit sine prole (o.s.p.) - (he or she) died without offspring pater - father requiescat in pace (R.I.P.) - rest in peace sic - so, thus testes - witnesses ultimo (ult.) - last uxor (ux, vx) - wife Verbi Dei Minister (V.D.M.) - minister of the word of God videlicet (viz, vizt) - namely -- Chrystie MYERS - Rootsweb List & Ancestry.com's Board Administrator MOYERS MYRES MAYERS MAJOR COWGER BROOKOVER KRABAL SWECKER MYERS HOMESTEAD - http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~chrystiem/

    1. [MOYERS] RE: Virus/Worm Solution
    2. Chrystie
    3. Subject: Worm Solution This will work! Hi Everyone: Thought you might find this very useful. Here's a computer trick that's very important today and ingenious in its simplicity. As you may know, when/if a worm virus gets into your computer it heads straight for your email address book and sends itself to everyone in there, thus infecting all your friends and associates. This trick won't keep the virus from getting into your computer, but it will stop it from using your address book to spread further, and it will alert you to the fact that the worm attacked your system. Here's what you do: first, open your address book and click on "new contact" just as you would do if you were adding a new friend to your list of email addresses. In the window where you would type your friend's first name, type in !000 (that's an exclamation mark followed by 3 zeros). In the window below where it prompts you to enter the new email address, Type in "WormAlert," which of course, isn't a real email address. Then complete everything by clicking add, enter, ok, etc. Now, here's what you've done and why it works: the "name" !000 will be placed at the top of your address book as entry #1. This will be where the worm will start in an effort to send itself to all your friends. But when it tries to send itself to !000, it will be undeliverable because of the phony email address you entered (WormAlert). If the first attempt fails (which it will because of the phony address), the worm goes no further and your contacts will not be infected. Here's the second great advantage of this method: if an email cannot be delivered, you will be notified of this in your In Box almost immediately. Hence, if you ever get an email telling you that an email addressed to WormAlert could not be delivered, you know right away that you have the worm virus in your system. You can then take steps to get rid of it! Please pass it on. -- Chrystie MYERS - Rootsweb List & Ancestry.com's Board Administrator MOYERS MYRES MAYERS MAJOR COWGER BROOKOVER KRABAL SWECKER MYERS HOMESTEAD - http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~chrystiem/

    3. 1. NEWS AND NOTES ------------------ 1a. WAGONS--HO! SPOTLIGHT ON POTTAWATTAMIE COUNTY. As wagon trains arrived in Council Bluffs, the local newspaper -- the "Frontier Chronicle" -- reported the news and included names of the men on the trains and where they came from. If your ancestors were heading west for the California Gold Rush in the spring of 1849, they might have passed through this area and their names might have been recorded. Check the newspaper extracts here in this ongoing project. It is claimed that more people went through Kanesville/Council Bluffs, Iowa on their way west than through St. Joseph and Independence, Missouri combined. http://www.rootsweb.com/~iapottaw/WgnTrnIndx.htm This Web site is part of the IAGenWeb Project and the USGenWeb Project.
