    2. If I remember my history (which I may be wrong) but the Osage tribe lived in Missouri around what would become Webster County, which was a part of Wright County....Anyway, they were ran out of Missouri when the first settlers started homesteading the lands........I do know for a fact that Indians lived in the area of Cantrell Creek (Webster and Wright County) in the late 1800's..........and also at the turn of the century........I have pictures of a Indian family visiting people on Cantrell Creek (I have no idea who they were........My mother, who was born in 1925 had an Indian friend, and one day they went to town...probably in the late 1930's and they were going to go to the movies, but they wouldn't let my mother's friend in because she was an Indian.............If I am not mistaken they may have Indian centers in Springfield today....But, I am not sure.........I know that Zany Lowery was Cherokee and she moved with her husband to Wright County in 1855..........I don't know if this answered your question or not......But, that is what I know about the Indians that were living in Wright County..... 1. Cherokee Indian
    2. Kathy
    3. Hello all: I would like to thank those of you who e-mailed the suggestion to add a name to my ancestor who was a Cherokee indian. I appreciate the interest. My great grandmother's name was Almeda Evangeline Mode. She was born 1866, Wright county. At some time I found her wedding information which gave her mothers name as M.A. Mode. At that time she was living in or around Carthage, Missouri, Richland township. I found her divorced with three boys, (one being my grandfather) in the 1900 census. It states her father came from Ohio, her mother from Tennessee. Because she may have remarried when she moved to Texas, I have no clue as to her last name at death.. at a time close to his death , he told my father that she (Almeda)was Cherokee Indian, that her sisters visited her wearing braids. He walked behind the group on a venture into town, as he was ashamed of the indian association. He gave the name of Almeda;s grandmother, the woman who walked on the Trail of Tears as being, Latoka Nationale. This mother had two other daughters , Blue Sky and Willow. He never talked about this until questioned by my father . I believe this family must have lived in areas around Carthage and those in Wright county for most of Almeda's young life. My original e-mail inquired about the validity of the Cherokees moving through Wright county and whether there were indian schools or other indications of this passage. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Kathleen Cochran-hutchinson

    3. Hello all; My Great grandmother was born in Wright county; supposedly she was descended from Cherokee indians who traveled through from the Trail of Tears. I am trying to verify the existance of Cherokees living in, or traveling through the county. Were there indian schools ? Is there a history of Wright county I might access? Surnames: OUTCALT, HERRON Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/jMB.2ACE/842 Message Board Post: I am looking for my gggrandparents' Peter and Annice OUTCALT's burial place. They lived at Willow Springs, MO, and he died there in 1911, but there is no record of his burial in Howell Co. even though my grandmother said her grandparents were both buried at Willow Springs. I do not know when or for sure where Annice died other than it was after 1912, nor do I know her maiden name. I believe there is a Willow Springs Cemetery in Wright County. A 3rd cousin of Peter's, Alice May HERRON, was buried there in 1940. (HERRON is her maiden name; I do not know whether she married). I am grasping at straws and would greatly appreciate any bit of information, no matter how small, on any OUTCALT. I have a lot of primary information on land transactions and other data from Peter's generation on, and will be glad to share. Vanette
