    3. Well, I tried to get the names corrected at Jeff City for the Soldiers Service card, but this is their response. Sorry I tried. Usually they are pretty good when I find mispelled names and correct them. However, at the present time, we are unable to make changes to the soldiers’ service card database because of technical issues with that database which needs to be converted to a new format and a server which needs to be replaced. We are not sure when these matters will be resolved. In the meantime, we are keeping a file of corrections that need to be made in this database. In the particular case of the Bozer/Boyer records there is an added complication because some of the typed index cards clearly say Bozer. We cannot change the original card, even if we believe it to be in error. (One of the principles of archival records management is that the archivist cannot change an original record; only the record creator can do that.) We do have control over how we create an index, but generally with a situation like this we would include both the original spelling and the suggested corrected spelling. Our reference supervisor isn’t sure that the current version of the database will allow us to associated two names with the same image and we don’t know at this point whether this will be an option in the new version either. This is something we will need to confer with the IT staff when this project is taken up. In other words, it might be possible for us to address this matter eventually, but we don’t think we will be able to do anything about this any time soon. Thank you for your inquiry.
