Monday, January 4th, 1993 at the Rosemont Bakery, Washington Park, Illinois. She was a Washington County native, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Smith. The St. Clair County Coroner's office reported Mrs. Eugea died at about 5:30 A.M. at St. Mary's Hospital in East St. Louis. Store owners said Eugea was shot after she told a gunman robbing the bakery that she recognized him. It was the first robbery ever reported at the store. Her husband of two years, Robert Eugea, 56, told authorities he had tried to get her to quit her job, but never thought she'd get really hurt. Before her marriage she was Helen Gregory. She lived in State Park Place. She has two children from her first marriage. Owners described her as a loyal employee who even delayed her family's Christmas Eve celebration to lend a hand at the bakery, which was shorthanded. A custodian and customer were in the store at the time. They were not injured. Eugea was counter clerk from 10 P.M. to 6 A.M. Owner Robert Ramirez said, "She worked about seven years. The guy walked in with a mask on and she recognized him saying, "I know who you are," with that he shot her several times". Ramirez has offered a $1000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the masked gunman. Posted in Independent Journal Thurs. Jan 21, 1993 Pg 8A
