    3. Mike does your book list any other springs in Washington County? Do you know the location of any of the caves here in Washington County? Does your book list any springs/caves in St. Louis County? I am interested in 2 springs in particular in Chesterfield. When my parents & I moved to Chesterfield back in the 50's we had to get water from a spring. This spring was on Eatherton Rd. at the bottom of Monarch Hill. This was in the Missouri River Valley also called "The Bottoms" by some of the locals. It's been many years since I've been by this spring & the last time I saw it it was down to just a wet spot on the rock bluff. On the next hill/bluff about 1/4 to 1/2 mile east of the above mentioned spring was another spring. My family lived on the top of this hill. These hills were sometimes refered to as "The Bluffs" This spring was on private property & it flowed out of a small cave. One time a friend & I & her brother & a friend of his hiked down to the cave. The guys took a flash light & crawled back in the cave as far as they could go. When they came back out we asked them what was back there. They told us not to ever go back there as it dropped off into a large chasm. They said they dropped a rock in it & never heard it hit bottom. Don't know if this was true or if they were just trying to scare a couple of naive girls. lol A few years later my cousin Pat & I hiked down to the same spring with intentions of finding out the "truth". I took a flash light & started crawling into the cave while my cousin waited outside. I was concentrating mostly on where I was crawling & putting my hands so as to try & avoid the really wet muddy spots. Anyway, after crawling about mid way back into the cave I raised my head to get my bearings. Well, that's when I saw "it". I was only inches from this large lizard like creature, maybe a foot long (looked a lot bigger at the time) & was bright orange with black spots & bulging eyes! Well, I mean to tell you that I back-crawled out of the cave in record time! Didn't care how muddy I got. lol Told my cousin what I saw & we both high-tailed it back to home! I didn't find out till sometime later that all it was was a harmless cave salamander. So I never did find out if there was a chasm inside of the hill we lived on or not. If you or anyone else has any information pertaining to this cave I would really appreciate it.
