He was born April 1, 1925 at Potosi, a son of the late Harry and Mamie (Huitt) Allen. He accepted Christ as his Savior September 18, 1939, at Bates Creek Baptist Church. Virgil was united in marriage to Dorothy Elgene Gillam October 7, 1944 in Potosi, Missouri. To this union three children were born. They were blessed with 59 years of marriage. Elgene preceded him in death on December 22, 2003. In 1955 Virgil served his country in the United States Army. He proudly served as a former Deputy Sheriff. Virgil led the Washington County Sheriff's Auxiliary for many years serving under his dear friend the late Steven J. "Sonny" Richards. He was retired from the Teamster's Union, but was still active in the organization. Virgil was also a long time member of the Washington County Farm Bureau and was honored to serve as vice-president of the organization. He was a member of the Cordia-Humphrey Post 265, American Legion, Potosi, and was instrumental in the organization of the Potosi Fire Protection District. He was also an active member of the Caledonia Fire Protection District. Virgil loved to farm and found a large amount of joy in the horses he raised. He attended the Caledonia United Methodist Church. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. In addition to his wife and parents, Virgil was preceded in death by two brothers, Herbert Webb Allen and Floyd Allen; and three sisters, Eunice Allen, Hazel Lewis and Florence Jarvis. Those who remain to mourn the passing of his life include his daughters, Charlotte and husband Tom Boyer of Potosi and Nancy Crump of Desloge; a son, Dale Allen and wife Claire of Belgrade; three sisters, Dorothy Jenkins of Belgrade, Mildred and husband Merle Sparks of Terre Du Lac and Gladys Hodges of Imperial; seven grandchildren, Theresa Probst of Desloge; Angie Boyer of Denver, Colorado; Jodie Burns of Nixa; Shaen Allen of Desloge; Chad Allen of Potosi; David Crump and wife Jamie of Farmington and Priscilla Allen of Belgrade; seven great-grandchildren, Tia Propst, Travis Smith, Mackenzie Burns, Breann Allen, Emily Merx, Trenton and Trevor Allen; nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends who will sadly miss him. Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, October 13, 2005 at the Britton Chapel, Potosi, with Rev. Linda Nelson, Rev. Mike Jarvis and Rev. Leonard Compton officiating. Honoring Virgil as pallbearers were: Eric Allen, Larry Allen, Tim Allen, Jerry Jenkins, Jesse Jarvis, H.E. "Bub" Hodges and Ed Jim Allen. Interment and final prayers were held at the Caledonia Methodist Cemetery. All arrangements were entrusted to the care of the Britton Funeral Home of Potosi.
