Portell, 82, of Festus, formerly of Herculaneum, died March 16, 1976 at her home. She was born in Old Mines, the daughter of the late Thomas and Laura (nee Lore) DeGonia. Mrs. Portell, who had been ill for a long time, was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Portell and five children, Loretta, Bernard, Audress and Russell Portell and Mary Watson. Surviving are 55 direct descendants. Survivors are six daughters, Lucille (Mrs. Theo) Dumont, San Francisco, Calif., Pauline (Mrs. Simon) Roth, Festus, Alma (Mrs. William) Sweet, Herculaneum, Betty (Mrs. Charles) Kurtz, Macon, Mo., Rosemarie Portell, Festus, and Jackie (Mrs. Paul) Weber, Austin, Tx.; two sons, George Portell, Herculaneum and Kenneth Portell, Orlando, Fl. Also, two sisters, Leah Barron and Rebecca Sims, both of St. Louis; a brother, John DeGonia, Mineral Point, 22 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements were by Vineyard Hillcrest. Mass Friday, March 19 at Assumption Church, Herculaneum with burial in Herculaneum Catholic Cemetery.
