Vernon, Illinois, was born February 13, 1931 in Highland Park, Michigan and passed away Tuesday, January 9th (1995) 11:20 p.m. at Good Samaritan Regional Health Center, she was the daughter of Arthur Clark Hargus, who was born June 11, 1902 in Washington County, Missouri and who died April 12, 1970 in Kirkwood, Missouri and Opal Josephine Henry, who was born May 29, 1903 in Washington County, Missouri, and who died August 11, 1972 in Potosi, Missouri. "Hank" attended the Potosi School System, graduating from Potosi High School in June of 1949. She was a member of the National Honor Society and selected Queen of the Prom as a Sophomore, these were but a few of her accomplishments. She met Isaac Talmadge (Tal) Smith who was teaching music in Potosi High School where Hank resided with her parents, Clark and Opal Hargus. Hank held many government positions in the agriculture area and served as Clerk of the Selective Service during the Korean War. During this time Hank and Tal were married. To this union, a son Clark Talmadge was born September 27, 1950 in Ironton, Missouri. Clark, who was nicknamed "Chuck" by his grandmother, married Judith Lynn Meyer September 16, 1972 in Quincy, Illinois, her hometown. Of this union two granddaughters, Alison Koren born April 21, 1978 and Lindsay Anne born April 8, 1982 were born in Danville, Illinois. Chuck taught orchestra in Danville for a period of time reverting to musical instrument repairs after a successful experience of 6 years teaching. Hank was well known in the business world in Mt. Vernon for over 25 years, having worked for Dr. C. K. Wells and the Register News as a proof reader and bookkeeper. She served the "Old" Illinois Cities Water Company and moved to City Hall when the city purchased the company. There she became a bookkeeper and served 12 years as the elected City Treasurer from November 1972 to April 15, 1985 when she retired. She is also survived by two brothers, Rev. Clark (League) Hargus and wife Julia of St. Louis. Clark is serving as interim minister of the Old Bonhomme Presbyterian Church in St. Louis. Hank's youngest brother Lynn Dodson Hargus and wife Sharon are from Highland, Illinois. Lynn is retired from the United States Postal Service in downtown St. Louis, Missouri. Henri Anne was an active worker in the Joel Pace Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She had also belonged to many other major organizations including Easter Star, B. & P.W. to name a few. She was preceded in death by her parents and is survived by many relatives throughout the United States too numerous to enumerate. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Good Samaritan Regional Health Center Hospice Program and will be accepted at the Hughey Funeral Home at any time. Hughey funeral Home was in charge of all preparations and arrangements. Rev. Clark Hargus provided caring words at the service. Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, January 11th, at the Chapel in Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens with burial following. No public visitation was held at the funeral Home.
