He was orchestra director and music teacher at Mr. Vernon Township High School from 1957 to 1981 when he retired. Born December 8, 1922, in St. Louis, he was a son of Isaac Talmadge Smith Sr. and Lou Anna (Longest) Smith, both of whom preceded him in death. He married Henri Anne “Hank” Smith on January 13, 1950, in Pocahontas, Arkansas and she died January 9, 1996. Memorial services were held Wednesday, September 29, 1999 at the Mr. Vernon Memorial Gardens chapel with the Rev. Clark L. Hargus officiating. Burial was in the Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens. Survivors include a son, Clark T. “Chuck” Smith and wife, Judy of Danville; two grandchildren, Alison and Lindsay Smith of Danville; a sister, Mary F. Anderson and husband Ralph of Granite City. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife. Mr. Smith was a member of the Mr. Vernon Masonic Lodge No. 31 AF&AM, choir director at the First Baptist Church and the First United Methodist Church, a past president of the Illinois Music Educators Association, a member of the National Education Association, the Illinois Education Association, Phi Mu Alpha Fraternity and American Legion Post 141 of Mr. Vernon. He was an Army Veteran of World War II. He enlisted February 5, 1943 and was discharged December 5, 1945. He was a prisoner of war. Mr. Smith graduated from Normandy High School in St. Louis and received a bachelor’s degree from Central Methodist College and a master’s degree from the University of Missouri. Memorials may be made to the Mr. Vernon Township High School Music Department. (Tal Smith will also be remembered as vocal and band teacher at Potosi High School, Potosi, Missouri from 1948-1957 and as a member of Potosi United Methodist Church.)
