She was born at Knob Lick, Missouri on May 8, 1916, a daughter of the late John A. Ervin and Virginia (Canterberry) Ervin. Jewel was first married to Roy Mackley and eight children were born to this union. Roy preceded her in death and she later married Earnest Shelton and he also preceded her in death. Jewel was a resident of Potosi Manor for the past 6 years and finally succumbed to Alzheimer disease. Jewel was a very kind and loving lady. She will be remembered for he warm heart and her caring smile. Her kind spirit and loving heart will be missed by all. In addition to her parents, first and second husbands, she was preceded in death by three sons, Charles, James and Vernon Mackley; one daughter, Sherry Mackley; three sisters, Grace Parrott, Mary Oder and Sadie Williams, and four brothers, Nathan, Dewey, John and Paul Ervin. Among those who remain to mourn her passing from this life are her daughters, Shirley Barton of Abilene, TX and Mary McEntire and husband Gary of Farmington, MO; her sons, Walter Mackley and Melvin Mackley both of Potosi; her twenty-five grandchildren; thirty-four great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 9, 2005 at Britton Chapel in Potosi with Rev. Don Sanders, Jr. and Rev. Kent Sanders officiating. Honoring Jewel as pallbearers were: Gary McEntire, Eddie Mackley, Kent Sanders, Walter (Rowdy) Mackley, Mike Guenther, Leroy Mackley, Walter (Wally) Mackley, Don Sanders, Jr. Junior pallbearers were: Grant Sanders and Kalob Anderson. Final prayers and interment were held at the New Masonic Cemetery, Potosi, Missouri. All arrangements were entrusted to the care of the Britton Funeral Home of Potosi.
