Surnames: EUGEA, GREGORY Classification: Death Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/lNB.2ACI/3915 Message Board Post: Former Potosian Murdered At Work In Illinois The Belleville (Illinois) News-Democrat reports that 56 year old Helen Eugea of Washington Park, was shot several times at about 4:30 A.M. Monday, January 4th, 1993 at the Rosemont Bakery, Washington Park, Illinois. She was a Washington County native, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Smith. The St. Clair County Coroner's office reported Mrs. Eugea died at about 5:30 A.M. at St. Mary's Hospital in East St. Louis. Store owners said Eugea was shot after she told a gunman robbing the bakery that she recognized him. It was the first robbery ever reported at the store. Her husband of two years, Robert Eugea, 56, told authorities he had tried to get her to quit her job, but never thought she'd get really hurt. Before her marriage she was Helen Gregory. She lived in State Park Place. She has two children from her first marriage. Owners described her as a loyal employee who even delayed her family's Christmas Eve celebration to lend a hand at the bakery, which was shorthanded. A custodian and customer were in the store at the time. They were not injured. Eugea was counter clerk from 10 P.M. to 6 A.M. Owner Robert Ramirez said, "She worked about seven years. The guy walked in with a mask on and she recognized him saying, "I know who you are," with that he shot her several times". Ramirez has offered a $1000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the masked gunman. Posted in Independent Journal Thurs. Jan 21, 1993 Pg 8A
The following article was published in the Daily Journal, Wednesday, June 9, 2005. Let the digging begin....... GOT SOMETHING OLD? WE WANT IT. By SHERRY GREMINGER\Daily Journal Managing Editor We are looking for memories tucked away in a shoebox. Clippings found in grandma's attic. Yellowed pieces of newsprint. Anything that is a part of your family life that you have saved from old editions of the Daily Journal. Bring them in and let us take a photo of them. Maybe you have a story to go along with them. We'd like to hear that too. The Daily Journal is celebrating its 75th birthday this year and in conjunction with that, we will be publishing a commemorative edition in late June. It's our readers who have kept us publishing all these years and so we would like to highlight you and the things that have kept you reading all these years. This anniversary edition will contain the history of the newspaper along with stories of some of the people who have made it work in the past and stories of those who continue to make it work today. We would like to add your family's memories to this special edition. There are also those people who like to save the front page of the newspaper that showcases a memorable day in history. We would like for you to also share those with us. We all remember where we were when President Kennedy was shot. Who has the Daily Journal front page from that day? There are many more memorable days such as when President Nixon resigned, when the Challenger exploded, the day the first man walked on the moon. If you have those papers, bring them in, let us photograph them with you and perhaps you can share a story with us that might be included in this edition. Anyone who would like to help us celebrate by sharing their clippings should bring them to the Daily Journal office on St. Joe Drive in Park Hills by Friday, June 17. The person bringing in the oldest clipping from the Daily Journal, previously called the St. Francois County Journal and before that the Leadwood Press, will be awarded a three-month subscription or a three-month extension to their existing subscription. Your clipping must have some proof of the date in order to be considered for the prize. Bring your entries to our Park Hills office between the hours of 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. and ask for someone in the editorial department. [Note: If you're out of town or out of state and unable to come to the office in person, arrangements can, hopefully, be made with Sherry to handle your entry by mail. The phone number for the Daily Journal Office is: 573-431-2010. Their mailing address is: P.O. Box A, Park Hills, MO 63601.]

I was only inches from this large lizard like creature, maybe a foot long (looked a lot bigger at the time) & was bright orange with black spots & bulging eyes! Well, I mean to tell you that I back-crawled out of the cave in record time! Didn't care how muddy I got. lol Told my cousin what I saw & we both high-tailed it back to home! I didn't find out till sometime later that all it was was a harmless cave salamander. So I never did find out if there was a chasm inside of the hill we lived on or not. > > If you or anyone else has any information pertaining to this cave I would really appreciate it. I know the spring you are talking about. It is about 12 ft up on a bluff if I'm not mistaken. I didn't know you could crawl back into it. From the ground below it did not look like much of a cave to me. I'll check with the MO cave people and get back to you. That lizard sounds like a cave salamander, but I was not away they got that big. Do you recall the name of that spring/cave to the east of the one you got water from? Mike
