I was looking on ancestry.com under my great grandfather Zeno Portell who was married to Mary Cornelia Trokey and someone has attached themselves to this family. This disturbs me when people assume that a partial name could be their ancestors. Not in Washington Co. those wonderful surnames like, Boyer, Portell, Coleman, Pashia, Bequette etc have to be really researched. I left this comment and I didn't mean to be rude, but I wanted to let the person know that John Thomas _Ronquest_ (javascript:$trees.util.gotoPerson(235 15661,1396438947);) (1865-1935) was not married to Mary Louise Portell, daughter of Zeno and Mary Cornelia Portell. "I am confused. You show this Mary Louise Portell as Zeno and Mary Cornelia Trokey Portell's daughter, but the death certificate shows Mary Ronquest and her parents are Nora Portell and ? Portell. Zeno and Mary had a daughter, Mary Louise born May 1872, died 17 Jan 1959. The death certificate you show is a different death date, 23 Sept 1959. I don't think this is the same Mary Louise Portell cause I remember her when I was young. Mary Louise was my grandmother Gertrude Portell Boyer, Annie Mercille, Victoria Tucker, Nellie Whaley, Lorena Mills, Gus and Joe Portell's sister. Mary Louise married Eugene Osia 05 Dec 1893 when she was 21. You have her married twice, once to Thomas Request as her first husband and then Eugene Osia. That would be impossible as Nelson Charles Ronquest is born 1891 and Mary Louise was not born until 1893." Mary Louise Portell was married to Eugene Osia 5 Dec 1893 and had 2 sons, Silas born 1893 and Clarence born 1909. If anyone know of this family would you please let the Ronquest know these are not the same Portell's. I don't think I am overlooking something, I did just find a death certificate for a Nora Portell who died 1926 married to John Portell and the informant was Nelson Ronquest. So this can't be the same family.

Thank you to all those who responded to my question about DNA test results Esther M. Ziock Carroll Genealogist, Historian, Author, Homemaker Servant to 10 cats, 2 dogs, 1 husband http://www.facebook.com/carrollscorner63664 http://www.facebook.com/ozarkhainthunters http://www.youtube.com/Ziock63664
I just got through watching the program "Find Your Roots" where they traced the history of a colored man. They also did a paternal DNA test & found that he had no African ancestor on his father's side. They told him that that meant that somewhere there was a white man in his paternal ancestry. So I am wondering now about my maternal DNA test. It shows that one of my maternal ancestors originated in Africa 50,000 years ago (Ice Immigrants) & migrated from the Middle East to Europe. The report doesn’t specifically state Africa but on the migration map it shows that that is where my ancestry started in Africa then to the Middle East then to Europe – if I am understanding all of this correctly. So I’m wondering if that means there was an African black woman somewhere way back in my maternal lineage? :-) Would like some opinions please.......... Esther M. Margaret was born at Richwoods, July 22, 1916 and was one of nine children growing up in Potosi after the Great Depression. She graduated from Potosi High School in 1934 as the class Salutatorian. Margaret was united in marriage to Veldon Hugh Dickey on November 8, 1946 after a loving courtship that started in Potosi at Veldon's nightclub, The Question Club. During this union they had one son, Steve Dickey. The family moved to Sullivan in 1960, where she became a long time and devoted member of Saint Anthony Catholic Church. Margaret felt so strongly about her Catholic faith that she became a generous supporter of the church and building of the new grade school at Saint Anthony. Margaret discovered her love and talent for business and retail while she worked with her father in the family Mercantile Store in Richwoods, Missouri. After high school she attended a business training school in St. Louis and was later employed for Western Auto. Margaret started her career in clothing retail when she began working with her sister-in-law, Vasel (Dickey) Crump while she and Veldon lived in Potosi. Margaret's proudest achievement in her professional career was the starting of her clothing store, The Dickey Bub Shop. This started out as a partnership with her sister-in-law Letha (Dickey) Bub. Afer many successful years together, Letha retired and Margaret continued on to open two additional clothing store locations. Dickey Bub Shop was opened in June of 1955 and was considered by many to be the only placed to get your best "Sunday" dress. Margaret spent many Saturdays venturing down to the Washington Avenue Garment District to find the latest trends and fashions for her customers. Margaret took pride in being able to offer her customers dress clothing for the entire family. She was a great stylist and had a keen sense of fashion and jewelry. Margaret continued at her beloved establishment to the age of 91. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Denise Dickey of St. Clair, Missouri; four grandchildren; Carrie Dickey of Union, Missouri; Brian Dickey of St. Clair, Missouri; Nathan Dickey of Columbia, Missouri and Erin Dickey of St. Clair; a brother, James Cordia of the state of California; a sister, Theresa Polk of Potosi, other relatives and friends. Along with her parents and beloved husband, Veldon, Margaret was preceded in death by a brother, Julius Cordia and five sisters; Hattie (Cordia) Coleman, Catherine (Cordia) Nester, Lucy (Cordia) Politte, Sister Florence Alexia Cordia and Rosemary (Cordia) Tuter. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Thursday, March 22, 2012 at 10 a.m. from Saint Anthony Catholic Church in Sullivan with Rev. Fr. Paul Telken officiating. Interment was in Saint Anthony Cemetery. Visitation was Wednesday evening from 4 until 7 p.m. from the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Saint Anthony Home and School Association. Funeral arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, MIssouri. On-line condoloences may be offered at eatonfuneralhom.com. Independent Journal, Potosi, MO, Thursday, March 29, 2012 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I've "rescued" an old photograph of John VALLE of St. Louis, Missouri which was taken at the Strauss Studio in St. Louis. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1880's with John in his teens or 20's at the time. Based on limited research I was able to gather the following information regarding John and his family: John Felix VALLE was b. 14 Dec 1861 in St. Louis, MO to parents John Baptiste VALLE (b. 1 May 1828 in St. Genevieve, MO) and Lucie Mary DESLOGE (b. 8 Jun 1836 in Potosi, MO). Someone put a picture of Mary Cornelia Trokey on Ancestry.com When you click on the picture the source or person who put it on has perhaps deleted her contact information. If this is the same Mary Cornelia Trokey that married Zeno Portell, then this is my great grandmother. I would love to have a copy of the picture or can you send me in an email and I can save it. I have a copy of Mary Cornelia with Zeno Portell if they would like a copy. Thank you, Sharon (Hartzell) Smith

Well, I tried to get the names corrected at Jeff City for the Soldiers Service card, but this is their response. Sorry I tried. Usually they are pretty good when I find mispelled names and correct them. Sharon (Hartzell) Smith ____________________________________ From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: 3/5/2012 2:08:47 P.M. Central Standard Time Subj: RE: Mispelled names for Civil War Regimen 32 RB Dear Ms. Smith: Thank you for bringing your concern to our attention. However, at the present time, we are unable to make changes to the soldiers’ service card database because of technical issues with that database which needs to be converted to a new format and a server which needs to be replaced. We are not sure when these matters will be resolved. In the meantime, we are keeping a file of corrections that need to be made in this database. In the particular case of the Bozer/Boyer records there is an added complication because some of the typed index cards clearly say Bozer. We cannot change the original card, even if we believe it to be in error. (One of the principles of archival records management is that the archivist cannot change an original record; only the record creator can do that.) We do have control over how we create an index, but generally with a situation like this we would include both the original spelling and the suggested corrected spelling. Our reference supervisor isn’t sure that the current version of the database will allow us to associated two names with the same image and we don’t know at this point whether this will be an option in the new version either. This is something we will need to confer with the IT staff when this project is taken up. In other words, it might be possible for us to address this matter eventually, but we don’t think we will be able to do anything about this any time soon. Thank you for your inquiry. Please let us know if we can be of further assistance. Schaaf transcribed, but on this website the names are missing, as I have printed the pages in 1827 with my family's names and other names from the Washington Co., MO./St Joachim area. There maybe more names from the book that I printed from, but I had the ones with my family names on it. That's why I typed up the names on the page from the book at the library, unfortunately I didn't note my source on the printed page, which may have been what Mrs. Schaff had transcribed. If you would like to see the page I have printed, let me know and I'll email it to you. If you would like I can try to get back to the St. Louis Headquarters Library and see what other pages may be missing from this website, http://www.mogenweb.org/washington/joachim-b.html Thank you, Sharon (Hartzell) Smith
I do not know if some bap records are missing from the St Joachim Church in Old Mines, May 1827, then start up again Sept 1827. However, if they are missing, they have been missing since the late 1930s when Mrs.Ida M. Schaaf transcribed these records. Her pages are numbered and the bap. do skip June, July, and August. You will notice the bap. start in Sept. and many of the bap. are for children born in the "missing months." I have always thought the Priest was away that summer. Just a guess on my part. Below is a link of several Washington County names with Soldier's Records. There are several Boyer's but the names are showing up as Bozer. I have contacted the SOS Archives to change the last names to Boyer. If you look at the individual names you can tell the names really should be Boyer. . _http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/soldiers/results.asp?sType=unit&txtUnit=32nd +Regiment+E%2EM%2EM%2E&selConflict=Civil+War&offset=0_ (http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/soldiers/results.asp?sType=unit&txtUnit=32nd+Regiment+E.M.M.&selC onflict=Civil+War&offset=0) Thank you, Sharon Smith ____________________________________ From: [email protected] To: [email protected], [email protected] Sent: 3/1/2012 12:18:32 P.M.
