This was an article that my mother had in her many piles of keepsakes and I don't know who it is. It was in one of the St. Louis newspapers, no date tho. The last name is spelled a little different that our Torrence's from Washington Co., so there may not be a connection, but wanted to pass on. This is an old newspaper and the back side advertisement looks as if to be between 1930's and 1940's. I could be wrong. I checked some of the St. Louis directories and census and SSDI, under the spelling of Torrence, Torrance, Torreance, did a soundex check, but NO John's with a Mamie are mentioned on Ancestry.com FOUND DEAD NEAR OPEN GAS JET John Torreance, 54 years old, a laborer, of 4518 Alaska Avenue, was found dead in the basement of his home last night, with a rubber hose in his mouth connected to an open gas jet and an overcoat over his head. The body was discovered by Mrs. Catherine Feller of 4525 Idaho Avenue, a passerby, who saw it on the floor of the lighted basement and called police. Torreance's wife, Mrs. Mamie Torreance, told police her husband has been drinking heavily in recent weeks and had threatened to end his life several times.
