    1. RE-DEDICATION CONDUCTED AT GEN. SHERMAN'S GRAVE
    2. Esther M Ziock Carroll
    3. RE-DEDICATION CONDUCTED AT GEN. SHERMAN'S GRAVE By: Esther M. Ziock Carroll (Published in the Independent Journal 10 March 1994) Despite the bitter cold weather(which froze the film in my camera & prevented me from taking any pictures) a re-dedication ceremony was held Sunday, February 27, 1994 at the grave site of Gen. Wm. T. Sherman, Calvary Cemetery, St. Louis. It was sponsored by the Sons of Union Veterans. Esther & Gene Carroll, Potosi Route, attended and represented Washington County. Esther's great great grandfather, Pvt. Brad Dicus, served under Sherman along with numerous other men from Washington County and surrounding area. Participating in the ceremonies were various re-enactors groups dressed in Civil War uniforms. A parade marched from the entrance of the cemetery to the grave site. Esther & Gene marched with the Daughters and Sons of Union Veterans groups of which they are members. At the grave site services were held, wreaths were placed and several rifle and artillery salutes were fired. At this time an incident occurred which added a bit of humor to the solemn occasion. The first big BOOM from the cannon set off someone's burglar alarm somewhere down the street as everyone could hear the alarm sounding. Within minutes several police sirens went screaming down the road! After the ceremonies the Carrolls had the honor of meeting Frederick Sherman Cauldwell, Jr., a great great grandson of Gen. Sherman. Esther shook hands with him and when she informed him that her great great grandfather served under Sherman, Mr. Cauldwell smiled and replied, "We're just like family then!" 1. visit the Kaes House
    2. Esther M Ziock Carroll
    3. If anyone would like to visit the Kaes House in Castlewood State Park the directions are below. You will need comfortable walking shoes & flashlights. Directions to Kaes house from Manchester Rd.: Turn south onto New Ballwin Rd. Take it to Kiefer Creek Rd. Turn right onto Kiefer Creek Rd. Go to St. Paul Rd. Turn left onto St. Paul Rd. Stay on St. Paul Rd till you get to the rail road tracks. Do NOT cross the tracks - if you do you've gone too far. Turn left onto the gravel road that runs parallel with the tracks ~ this is called Jedburg Lane but I can't remember if there is a sign for it. Keep going till you come to two houses. You'll know which one is the correct house when you see it. There is a brick house & just a few hundred yards up & to the left of it is the Kaes house. You will have to park here & do the rest on foot. Walk east through the front yard of the home & you will see the stone wall of the spring house on the left at the base of the hill. This is the entrance to the cave. There are bushes in front of it - just walk through the middle of them & through the doorway & you are in the cave. There are two rooms in the cave. You will need some flashlights. J! ust east of the cave are the corn cribs. The house looks run down but it is still salvageable. It is boarded up & locked but there are peep holes in the window boards. so you can see inside many of the lower floor rooms. You can also go to Mapquest & type in Jedburg Road, Sherman Mo. then click on the red star in the center of map several times to bring it in close. http://www.mapquest.com/ Historic Landmark Home Endangered http://carrollscorner.net/SitesSt.LouisCo._Sherman.htm Petition For Preservation of Kaes House http://carrollscorner.net/KAES_HOUSE_PETITION.htm

    3. Petition To Preserve The Kaes House If you would like your name added to the list please send an email to: crittersRus@centurytel.net This beautiful house at Sherman, St. Louis County, Missouri is believed to have been built in the 1850's & is listed as a St. Louis County landmark. Local legend says that it may have been Gen. Wm. T. Sherman's house at one time. Also it may have been part of the Underground Railroad during the Civil War. This antebellum home deteriorates more with each passing year and if something isn't done soon it will be beyond repair. It would be a shame to lose yet another piece of St. Louis / Missouri history. Please contact anyone you may know who might help in this effort to save this house. Any and all help is very much appreciated.
