The papers I received were not the hospital records. They were the court documents that were filed when the person was committed. I believe that they had to be committed by a judge. They contain a lot of family information on him. His father had him committed. I did not need a court order or any other legal document. I just asked. In fact, he turned out not to be a member of my family. Jim James R. Cindy, When I wanted my great grandmother's records from State Hospital #2 in St. Joseph, I had to write to the current facility (same location) for a form requesting a court order from a specific judge in Buchanan County. Once I actually sent the form to the judge, I had the court order in hand in less than a week. The records were then released to me in very short order for a small fee. Since #3 has been demolished, you should probably make an inquiry to the state's office for mental health in Jefferson City. Sorry I don't know the address, but you should be able to find it using a search engine. They certainly ought to know where the records are located and which court you would need to contact for the release order. Don't give up, because it's well worth the effort. Jackie

Hi Terry - I'd be very interested in how you got your records? The letter sent to me states "after consultation with our Attorney General's office we were advised that these records can only be released with a court order. Upon receipt of this order, we will be glad to search our files." Sounds ominous doesn't it? I might try asking my family physician - but I'd really like to know if anyone has been able to get records without all the red tape? And why would there be such a process for records as old as 1916? Lyndon, I'm not sure what controversy you refer to, but I remember reading somewhere that the graves in the hospital cemetery were not recorded in the "Cemetery Directory of Vernon County, Missouri" because the residents (patients) were not considered to be part of the community. I believe this may have been stated in the preface to the book itself, but it's been several months and I've slept a few times since seeing it. Kind of sad. My greatgrandmother lived a good portion of her life in the Hume area and died in #2 in St. Joe. As best I could tell from her hospital records, she was committed because she had epilepsy and some sort of cognitive or "nervous" disorder. Jackie Springfield, MO
I was given an address in El Dorado Springs to send for the hospital records for my gggrandfather, Thomas P. Moore, who died April, 1916 at State Hospital #3 in Nevada, Vernon Co., Missouri and received a reply stating that records could not be released without a court order. Is that the common practice for all hospital records - no matter how old they are? Anyone know how to acquire those records without a court order? I really think he was there because his family could not afford any other hospitalization - he was only a patient for 10 days. He had been living in Oklahoma and was on a visit to his daughters in Joplin and in El Dorado Springs when he fell ill. Thanks for the information about the hospital - I suppose it would have been too costly to keep but it seems quite a shame it was torn down. And I went thru Nevada in Oct. 1998 but at that time didn't have the information I have now about Thos. P. passing away at that hospital. Cindy
Cindy, I am certainly not a State Hospital expert, but I think your observation is correct - that many people were put in the State Hospital for many reasons. I think that some were just "slow" or "odd" who ended up in #3. Even in the 1960's I remember going to #3 to judge dairy cattle - they had an outstanding hered. Patients who were walking around were sometimes "strange", but maybe they were medicated - I don't know. I think that some of the folks that we see on the streets today that we might consider "strange" would have been in #3 in former years. Please excuse my use of these terms if they are not politically correct, but I can't think of better terms. I suppose that these terms are better than the terms insane and lunatic that were widely used in earlier days. I have quite a lot of early Post Cards of #3 and it amazes me that people would have sent a post card from there! It demonstrates a different attitude about the Insane Asylum I suppose. I recall reading about the State Hospital cemetery. Maybe someone can address the controversy about it? Lyndon

She was married to John Wesley Riley, and their daughter Eva L. Riley was my paternal grandmother's mother. Several of Victoria's great grandchildren, (my dad's cousins) remember her when they all lived on a ranch in Ware, Dallam Co., TX in the late 1920's and early 30's. I have numerous pictures of Eva and a couple of her sister Isabelle, but I'd like to learn more about Victoria and John Wesley Riley. (I am sure we have traded email on this subject, but I can not locate our correspondence!) Cheers, Jim Stevens > > > Child Victoria Lindsey born 1852 KY, probably married Riley. I had a friend that worked at the State Hospital on a construction project probably in the 70's. As they were working one of the patients wearing a long overcoat watched them pouring concret setting forms and such. After they were done he stated that will never pass inspection. The next day sure enough it did not pass the inspection, this friend asked him how he knew this and what was he doing as a patient. His reply was that he was an engineer and he got tired of the ratrace of the "real world", checked himself in to the hospital. He said I got a bed and three good meals a day and don't have to work, then just turned around and walked off. There were many reasons why people were in the State Hospital. When it first started they produced all food, beef, pork, milk and vegetables for the hospital and sold the excess for revnue. Then that was deemed unfair to the residents, so then they just got to sit and do nothing basically. All of the buildings on the hospital grounds were connected by tunnels, you could go anywhere on the complex and never have to go outside, the tunnel went under what is today Ash street to the building that was across the street on the East side of Ash. The state of Mo had just spent millions of dollars redoing the main building a year or two before they closed it and now it has been torn down, now that is your tax dollars put to work for you. They also used to take people there for the drunk tank, when there was public intoxication, I know this happened in the 70's. Lisa Handly-Stewart
Sending my thanks to Lyndon for sharing his web site address http://www.lyndonirwin.com/weltmer.htm. My gggrandfather, Thomas P. Moore was a patient at State Hospital No. 3 at Nevada for 10 days before he died in April 1916 -- Lyndon's web site provided wonderful photo's of this hospital also. I'm wondering, was the State Hospital also for the indigent? Cindy
In reply to the request for information about the Weltmer Institute, I have placed some information on the web along with some pictures. Address is: http://www.lyndonirwin.com/weltmer.htm Lyndon Irwin
Looking for anyone with any information on surname HARBERSON, circa 1850s-1920s. Thanks in advance for any assistance. Mary in TX
C.D. Lindsey/Linsey/Lindsay lived in Vernon Cnty, MO from abt 1852-1911 with his family. Does anyone have ties or can look up information on any of these families listed in Eunice Mildred Lamkin-Lindsey (formerly of Vernon Cnty, MO)? She kept journals and we have begun to look at one beginning in 1918 Looking for his family ties. She mentioned Leslie Williams and Adolph Rutherford getting married on June 18, 1918. At this time, I don't know who these people are; probably friends. Mr. McElairahan/McClairahan being buried in his son's chapel on Jan 17, 1918. Does anyone have ties or can look up information on any of these families listed in Eunice Mildred Lamkin-Lindsey (formerly of Vernon Cnty, MO)? She kept journals and we have begun to look at one beginning in 1918 Child Victoria Lindsey born 1852 KY, probably married Riley. After looking through Journal, I find the name Riley, so this is pretty much confirmed that this is the right family connection in Vernon Cnty, Mo. In 1880 census is listed a Willard 16 and Naomi 11. Not sure who these two children married. Does anyone know? Have not found marriage record at LDS on these two. Alice Lindsey, 22 b MO is listed as a daughter of Charles D. Lindsey, Vernon Cnty, MO census of 1880. I found an Alice Lindsey who married a Bellamy, now I am sure she is our Lindsey (due to name listed in journal. Some addresses listed in her journal were for Mrs. Alice (Lindsey) Bellamy, Mrs. M. K. Lindsey (Who is this?. Feel confident these are her husband's family connections. In 1918 Eunice Mildred Lamkin-Lindsey and John Charles Lindsey had moved back and forth between MO., Fayette, Ark, living in Fayette and Greenland, Ark (also Greer Cnty, OK-TX). In the journal she mentioned several visits from Alice Bellamy coming to visit them. She listed the address of another relative: Mrs. M. K. Lindsey of Eddyville, Iowa (I have not figured out yet who this might be). Does anyone have a relative from MO who married a M.K. Lindsey? I have run across note she mentioned in the Journal about people I am unsure of the connection. She listed the address of Mrs. C.J. Melton in Sheldon, MO; Mrs. Alice Bellamy who evidently moved from Mo. to Butler ?; and Mrs. M.K. Lindsey of Eddyville, Iowa. I have only scanned the first journal and not carefully, just tried to pick out names, etc. Any connections or information would be welcome. Perhaps we can connect some information together. It will take time to read the notes for all the days from Eunice Mildred Lamkin-Lindsey's journal beginning in 1918. Some names mentioned: Leslie Williams and Adolph Rutherford married June 1918. Looks like: Mr. McClairahan or Mr. Elclairahan buried at Son's Chapel, cold and raining, Jan. 18, 1918. I have been waiting on my husband to decipher this journal, but will have to do it myself (along with my other genealogy work). It will take me quite a long time to do all the journal, plus another that we have not yet enlarged and copied. We placed the originals in inserts to protect the sheets which were written in pencil. If you think you connect or know these people who may have been in MO, then in Ark or OK. There is also some connection to a David Ostrander during the Civil War. Don't know his family connection but have two letters written by a young man in the Seige of Vicksburg to him. These letters were donated by my husband to Lubbock Tech. However, the sent me copies for my genealogy research. Shirley A. Goings-Lindsey WLindsey@msn.com
I have that Lavara Holland Jamison died 3 Sep 1936 and is buried in Newton Cemetery, Vernon co, Missouri. I believe her husband, Pierce Lindsay Jamison is buried with her. I only have his birth date of July 1844. When did he die? Their children were: William H., Ernest J, Grace, and Ica Jamison. Ica Jamison married Leon Hess. Who did the other children marry? All seem to be buried in Vernon Co, Missouri. Thank you, Kathleen Rizer
I believe I misspelled the name of the Institute I seek information on from the 1910 period of Nevada, Missouri. It should read "Weltmer's Institute." John
I'm hoping someone on the List knows some of the history of Wertmer's Institute of Nevada, Missouri and will share it with me or point me in the right direction. I'd also like to find out if any of its old records are still in existence. Thanks in advance, John Arnold Marblehead, MA jarnold2@mediaone.net
