    1. Nevada MO
    2. I replied privately to David Strain about Nevada obits. Then I saw another request but deleted it too soon. So I'm sending a copy of the note I wrote to David for anyone else who is interested: David -- Nevada is my hometown, but I've been gone from there a long time. There is a genealogy society there -- I don't know the address. The library has some obits in a file that I think was made by this society. I don't know what years it covers, but I found interesting things there. You could probably find the Library address on-line and write to the society in their care. Also check with Pat Brophy at the Bushwhacker Museum run by the Vernon County Historical Society. Good luck, Sarah HARRIMAN White, related to Harrimans and Inwoods who lived in Nevada.

    3. Greetings! Am not aware of anyone ever having compiled an obituary index for Vernon County newspapers. Newspapers that are searchable can be found on microfilm however. The Cemetery Directory for Vernon Co., MO, does NOT have a listing for Joseph Marion STRAIN, although it does have a few STRAIN and STREIN listings. TTYL Craig "Always looking for Cousins!" 1. trail from Ill. to MO. ?
    2. Beard, Paula
    3. It appears that the Beard family also came from eastern Illinois to western Missouri. I was told that there was work in the area with the coal mining strip pits. I too would love history of the area and others who came this way. I'm sure there were families that traveled together to the area, and most likely were neighbors. Anyone else with info on the area?

    2. William "Bill" Webb
    3. Hello, Maybe I can help a little on this one. I made a trip to Vernon Co. last August in search of WEBB Family that resided there. They resided in what used to be Clayton, MO just prior to the 1900's. When I got there I couldn't find Clayton so I went into a small Post Office west of Nevada and inquired as to where it was. The lady working the office that day said that Clayton was renamed to "Eve" several years ago. Approximately 6 miles east of Ft. Scott, KS (on Highway 54) is a road sign that says Ft. Scott 6 miles (onto the west) and Eve 1 mile (to the south). Eve is a very small community. I honestly don't remember seeing a population sign. In Eve is a small white church with a tall steeple that has a sign out front "Clayton Christian Church". I was told the church is all that still bears the name of what was formerly Clayton, MO - now Eve, MO. Hope this helps on Eve. Sorry I can't help on the cemetery. 1. 1880 Census Look Up Request
    2. Stephen Carlile
    3. I just received a copy of my ancestor Ralph David Anderson's application for a SSN from the Social Security Administration. The writing is not that clear on some parts of the application but the place of birth appears to be Montevallo. It is definitely not Monticello as the "vall" after the Mont (or Mant) is clear. There may be an "e" or "a" between the Mont and vall, and the last letter in the word could be an "a" an "o" or a "u", but I am assuming it is an unclosed "o" and that it was spelled as it sounded to Ralph David and the name should be Montevallo. I believe Montevallo is in fact a town or township in Vernon County. My late Aunt told me that Ralph David Anderson was born at his grandparents house in Missouri. I have not been able to locate them to date, but I have been mostly looking in Lewis County because other relatives believed Ralph David was born in Monticello. Would someone on this list who has access to the 1880 Vernon County Federal Census look up a Henry and Nancy McDonald Ragan (Ragen, Reagan, Riggen) family for me. They may be living in or around Montevallo, and their daughter Martha (Matt or Mattie) may be living with them. Thank you very much.

    3. This is from the Higbee News, Higbee, MO (Randolph / Howard Co). It was posted to the MOHOWARD-L list by Kathy Bowlin who has been transcribing the newspaper and posting her transcriptions to the list. I thought I would forward it the the Vernon Co list just in case someone had an interest. Chuck Edmonds 7 Jan 1898--Franklin Hart, an old and well known resident of this county, died at the home of his son-in-law in Nevada Monday morning aged 84 years. He had been in feeble health for a long time past, but about 10 days ago he became so much worse that it was apparent that the end was near, and as a result his death was not unexpected. He was a man of integrity and high moral worth and was held in the highest esteem by everybody with whom he was acquainted. He was an uncle of the editor of this paper and father-in-law of Cassie Crews, a well known citizen of Walker. His remains were laid to rest in Deepwood cemetery Tuesday evening. The deceased left one son, James P. Hart, of Ft. Scott, Kan, and two daughters, Mrs. John B. Harvey, of Nevada, and Mrs. Cassie Crews of this place, to mourn the irreparable loss of a kind father. Peace to hisashes.--Walker Herald. Mr. Hart at one time lived near Sturgeon and is well know in this county. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
