    1. Burnetss & Craighead/Craghead Families, 1800s-1900s

    3. I am looking for information on two families. First, there was the family of JAMES ROBERT CRAIGHEAD/CRAGHEAD m. CORDELIA "DELIA" JENNINGS, c. mid-1800s, in Callaway County. They moved to Harwood, Vernon County, a short time afterwards and continued to reside in Vernon County for about 11 years, before moving back to Fulton, Callaway County, MO. Both died in Fulton and are buried there. At least one of their children was born in Harwood: FLORENCE CRAIGHEAD/CRAGHEAD, b. 1880. The other family was GEORGE W. BURNETT m. EMMA/ANNA JENNINGS.. They moved around a great deal during their marriage. Their first child, CHARLES ISHAM BURNETT, was born in 1872, in Atchison, KS, but in 1875, my grandmother, ANNA C. BURNETT, was born in Schell City, Vernon County. In 1880, Emma/Anna gave birth to their third and last child, OTIS WILLET BURNETT and not long afterwards, Emma/Anna died. I think that Otis "Willie" may have been born in Morgan County, IL, where George was from originally. I have a newspaper clipping that records a gruesome murder in Vernon County, c. 1920s (have on file and details are vague right now) where a Sheriff Craighead/Craghead was heading the investigation into the murder. This might be of interest to someone researching the Craighead/Craghead surname in Vernon County. Also, I have recently discovered the names of the parents of CORDELIA & EMMA/ANNA JENNINGS, who were sisters: REUBEN & ELIZABETH JENNINGS, both originally from VA. Cordelia, b. 1856 and d. 1918, and Emma/Anna, b. 1851 and d. c. 1880, were also born in VA. The parents of GEORGE W. BURNETT were JAMES H. BURNETT m. SARAH JANE/ANN MAXFIELD. This may have been the second marriage for James Burnett. I have much more information to share concerning both of these families. Thanks, Patricia

    3. Does anyone have access to old newspapers of the Vernon County area? My gggrandfather was in the county for a number of years prior to 1858 when he married Virginia C. Morris. He disappears with the 1860 census and leaves Virginia living at home with her mom and dad and with a son also named Jesse A. Lowe. I'm just speculating, but with all conflict in that area prior to the Civil War, could he have been a victim? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Doreen Lowe Shewmaker Texas

    3. I need help transcribing a piece of information off this census. I copy of microfilm I have is very poor. The family is D.P. Hullum (?) Vernon Co., Ed 158, Sheet 4 I can't make out the age of the head of household. Also, if anyone has access to 1910 soundex H450 and H452 I need to know if this family was in MIssouri in 1910. His real name is Perry David Hellums. Sometimes spelled Helms. That's why both soundex codes are needed. I have found it listed as above and also as David P., P.D. and other variations. His wife's name was Emily some times listed as Emma. I am trying desperately to verify Mr. Hellums age.

    1. Hand dug wells
    2. Do any of you listers know how the old, hand dug open wells were constructed?  Our early ancestors lived near streams or springs for a water supply.  As population increased, alternative water sources included hand dug open wells with a bucket on a rope.  Historical documentation seems to be lacking on how it was done.  If you know of any good information sources, I would appreciate the information.  Thank you. 3. I still have one in use today, of course it has a pump attached that brings the water into the house. The way mine is constructed is it is about 24 feet deep and about 6 foot diameter. It is lined with native rock. I am sure they dug it out just like they did when I had it cleaned 10 years ago one bucket at a time. When the water table falls in the summer, you can tell because you can see where the water comes into the well thru the rocks. These wells usually can not keep up with all the demands of the modern world, so then you have to have water hauled in by truck. Of course you can spend five thousand like I did at the new house (up the hill from the old well) and not be able to drink it because of the sulfur, but I have plenty of it. So now I get to haul water to drink. The bright side is that the sulfur water will heal diaper rash and athletes foot.
