Hello, Sue. According to our Mapquest, there is about a 32 mile drive between Carbon Center and Deerfield. (http://www.mapquest.com is a convenient website) I know nothing about your question on cemeteries, unfortunately. Good luck. Paul Haynes in Ann Arbor, MI Native of Nevada, MO Paul
Could someone please tell me were Carbon Center, MO is? Also, does it have a cemetery?I know that it is in Vernon Co., MO. Where is it from Deerfield, MO.? Susie Sue Crawford Smith
Has anyone responded to the question of whether Walnut Grove Cemetery is in or near Eldorado Springs, MO and if there is a list people buried there? I believe James Thomas Morris and Elizabeth Ann Morris (or maybe they went by Thomas and Ann) are buried there. Other names are Boultinghouse, Elliot, Nancy Morris. I would like to find out more about this cemetery. Thank you, Gayle
In the 1903 Plat Book of Vernon Co., Mo, it shows that Schell City is in Bacon township. In the map of Schell City between streets 2nd and 3rd and between Walnut St and Hickory, there is a school listed as Public School. I found no listing for Towne School in this book, other than the school I mentioned which is in the town of Schell City. When I have been to Nevada, MO have found alot of information from the Nevada Library, they have a genealogy dept. there, and some Vernon Co., MO history books.
I was told by someone from the Tri-City Historical Society that there is a school in Schell City called Towne school. Can anyone provide me with more information on it, either present day (whom I can contact) or its history? Thanks in advance. Vicki Broughton
Thanks to someone reading my posting on the "Vernon County Cemetery," I looked up the info again and found it's in Henry County. This was my response to him: "Hmmm - guess I'll have to search out that cemetery again. This is where I found the info - http://www.rootsweb.com/~mohenry/cemetery/cem1093.htm. My family went between Vernon, Henry and Bates counties from about 1850 until they left in 1883. Apparently she was buried in Henry county. Sorry for the error. I wish Vernon county had a searchable page like this one!" Guess I should tell the people doing that cemetery that it's not just a "black cemetery." I found the burial place for my great grandfather's first wife Martha Thompson McKee, in Deepwater Twp, Vernon County, MO in the Montrose Mount Cemetery. She died in 1857 when their third child was about one month old and was possibly the first burial there. It is now listed as a cemetery for African-Americans but definitely wasn't when she was buried there as she was a white woman. I thought you might be interested in case you are looking for a caucasian and bypass this cemetery because of the description. I found the cemetery listing through the Vernon County GenWeb site. Some one in Nevada sent me a picture and article on the old Schoolhouse for Black children in Nevada. I scanned it in and would be happy to sent it to anyone who wants it. Jim . . . James R. I am searching for information on my great aunt and uncle that lived in Bates and Vernon counties in Missouri. Gertie was born in 1895 and Ray about the same time. I don't have a definite date or location for his birth or their deaths. Ray worked for the railroad for many years. I believe they may have spent the last days of their lives in Bates county, but I know they lived in Vernon County also. If anyone on the list knows of them or has any information about them, I would love to hear from you. They may have lived as long as the 1960-1970 time line. Thanks. One more time.....William Miller and wife, Sarah Wilkins, had two sons, James Thomas born 1854, and Jesse Clements born 1856, in or around Nevada, Vernon County, Missouri. I've had this brick wall forever. Got information on the sons from my grandmother's Bible and William and Sarah's names from J. T.'s marriage license information. I believe William and Sarah were both born in Missouri, but that's a puzzle, too. Any help not matter how minute will be great. Sandy in Louisiana

I am stuck at a brick wall with respect to my great-grandfather John Edward Brown, and I hope that some census data may be able to give me some clues for getting past it. I have not been able to find Vernon County census data online. Can anyone recommend where I can find Vernon County census data in books (I'll eventually go to microfilm if I have to do it that way, but it gives me headaches and I'd rather read from a book, especially if I have to spend hours going through unindexed pages looking for the names). Either transcriptions or copies of the original pages will make me happy. I'm especially interested in years 1880 and 1900. Is there a library in Vernon County (or elsewhere in Missouri) that would have this census information in book form? I'm in Rolla, several hours from Vernon County, and I would be willing to drive down there to look at the books - I just don't want to waste the trip if there are no books available, because I can get the microfilm locally if it comes to that. Would these records be available in book form somewhere else, such as Jeff City? Or, if some kind soul has access to this info and is willing to do a lookup for me, that would be wonderful. Here is the info I am looking for: My great-grandfather John Edward Brown was born 15 July 1885 in Nevada, MO (Vernon County). He moved to south central Oklahoma around 1900, to the city of Ardmore. He died 10 March 1981 in Rotan, TX, and is buried in Ardmore, OK. His parents were Wilson S. Brown and Catherine (Miller) Brown. I have no other information about them. I would like to know if Wilson S. Brown and Catherine (Miller) Brown show up in the 1880 census for Vernon County. If there is any reasonable substitute for an 1890 census for this area, I'd like to know if John Edward Brown or his parents show up on it. I'd like to know if John Edward Brown or his parents show up in the 1900 census for Vernon County. I suppose his parents might also have been there in 1870, or maybe still around in 1910 or 1920 - I don't know anything about when or where they were born or died or buried. Thank you very much for any help or advice you can give. Chuck Bennett PS - Those of you with grandparents and great-grandparents still alive - talk to them now! Not just about genealogy and history, of course - but I sure wish I had talked with Grandpa Brown about his life and family while he was still alive! I was too young to really care then, and he never brought up those subjects. Don't wait!
I am looking for land purchase records between 1852 and 1870. Around Vernon County. I and interested in Township 16, Southridge 20, West Section 874. Am looking for any information on WILLIAM L. EDINGTON and his wife NANCY JANE WILLIAMS. William moved from Ky. to Mo. about 1852 and lived in Vernon County during the Civil War Era. William pruchased 200+ acres in Vernon County, Township 16, Southrange 20, West Section 874. He died about 1866 either killed by Jayhawkers or during the Cholera epidemnic. Kelly Edington.
In a1886 and a 1903 plat map I found a Mrs. N. Cunningham in Moundville township, she is located about 3 miles from the Drywood township line. She is Township 34 North, Range 32 West, in section 2, looks like she had 40 acres. In the 1903 plat map in Badger township there is a H. Cunningham and a M.V. Cunningham in Walker township Hope this helps.
James Baker, What a wonderful website. Thank you so much for your effort. There are several surnames in my primary family lines listed here. I was wondering if you possibly had the detailed info on the 1860 census of Drywood twp. listing Sarah Cunningham and N A Cunningham? If so, could I trouble you for the details? I would be forever grateful. Thanks again for all that you have done. Sandi
