Quick tip: RAOGK (Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness) is a great place to go if you need someone to look up information for you. It used to be listed on rootsweb's main page, but it is no longer there (I wonder why :o\). I am including the link below. There is a volunteer for Vernon county and in the past she has helped me locate obituaries for many of my distant kin. She has offered to look up census, marriage, cemetery and obituary information at the library. RAOGK is a great way to get help in places you can't go, and help out people researching in your area. http://www.raogk.org/ Damon _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx
Regarding look-ups in the Nevada library, one newspaper that covered old Vernon happenings was the El Dorado Sun. Any information found in an early newspaper about the marriage on 18 Nov., 1877 of John L. Workman & Nancy Elizabeth Price ("Lizzie Price") would be welcome & wonderful. Or about the birth of their son, Rob't Lee Workman on 6 Apr., 1880. My maiden name was Antoinette Workman & John L. is my great grandfather, about whom I know very little. He arrived in Vernon with Hiram Taylor after the death of his wife in Clark Co., IL ca. 1876. Antoinette avawter1@email.msn.com

This came from a list I copied back in 1999, this is not all the county's for the state of MO. and I cannot guarantee accuracy. This will hopefully give you a clue as to where you might go look if you can't find your "Person" in a certain county. Vernon Co. was not formed until 1855, before that it was Bates Co., county seat Nevada. Bates Co., was not formed until 1841 from Cass Co., the county seat is Butler. Cass Co., was formed by renameing it from Van Buren Co in 1849. Van Buren Co. (extinct) was formed in 1835 from Jackson Co., it was renamed in 1849. Jackson Co was formed in 1826 from Lafayette Co., the county seat is Independence. Lafayette Co., was formed by renaming Lillard Co, the county seat is Lexington. Lillard Co. (extinct) was formed in 1820 from Cooper Co., renamed Lafayette Co. 1825 Cooper Co., was formed in 1818 from Howard Co., county seat is Boonville. Howard Co., was formed in 1816 from parts of St.Charles and St Louis Counties the county seat is Fayette St. Charles county was formed in 1812 as an Original District; the county seat is St. Charles St. Louis county was formed in 1812 as an Original District; the county seat is St Charles. St. Louis county was formed in 1876 from the Original District land and parts of the City of St. Louis, the county seat is Clayton St Louis City was first settled in 1764 and officially recogized as an American city in 1804; it is an original district. It is not a county as such; records are in the city.
I have noticed recently that the AT&T servers have been a little slow causing some of the pages to seem to not work. I have found if you refresh the page or try the link a few times it will finally come up. Hi Fellow Researchers. Do any of you have a Topo Map covering a part of the county that would show what part of the county Twp 34 Rng 29 is located. I would greatly appreciate your help. James
James, My Vernon County map shows that it is Montevallo Twnshp, located in the SE corner of the county. I got this great map that shows all the townships, streets, etc for all of Vernon County by calling the Nevada/Vernon County Chamber of Commerce, 110 South Adams, Nevada, MO 64772 (417)667-5300. They sent me one at no cost, plus a great folder of information. Molly

Hi everyone- I am very excited about all of the activity on this list! I have digitized and posted the "Nevada Souvenir" on my web site. This is a 40 page booklet that gives information on ~200 people and ~100 businesses in Nevada around 1910. I have been told that the historical society has a copy of the booklet, but if you are like me (2,000 miles away) it is hard to access. The online version is an exact duplicate of the original (formatting and everything), and I will be happy to provide anybody with a copy of the original high resolution scanned images of the booklet. Just drop me an email with your address and I will send you copies on CD. The Nevada Souvenir is here: http://home.attbi.com/~waring16/nevada/souvenir/index.html (If you bookmark this site, please bookmark http://www.damonwaring.com - I may change ISP's in the future) I also maintain an index of all names, not related to me, which I run across in my hunts. I do this in hopes that maybe I stumbled across a source someone has not seen yet. Currently, the list is only for 2 documents (~300 names) ... but I will be adding more later. http://home.attbi.com/~waring16/othernameidx.html Finally, I am researching the following names in Nevada: Hagood Cockerill Bond McIlhany Thanks! I was told that the early tax lists that were in the courthouse were microfilmed, then given to anyone who wanted them. Some were thrown away. I was lucky enough to buy the one for Center Township for 1907 in a flea market there. It's on my website. The Bushwacker Museum has some of them, but I don't know which ones. I saw them there. Hi Fellow Researchers. Is there a Tax List covering the years 1856 through 1858 available for the County? Thanks for a reply. James
This will let you know the names I am researching. My Grandfather is Delton Carter born in Nevada Missouri 9/1884 and died in Weiser Idaho. His mother was Mary E Armstrong b-jun 1853 in Kentucky. Her parents were Rufus Armstrong and Elizabeth Craft. I am looking for John Hereford Carters parents or any other information you might have. John Carter died in Nevada 27 Jan 1906.I know he was buried in Antioch Cemetary. Also both of my grandmothers maiden names are Wilson-Ella Mae and Nellie Ellen. Would love to hear from anyone with ties to these names. I have some pictures of Delton and Rufus. Dianne Petersen
I am new to this list - as of today - and am looking for information on Charles Steel(e). He was born about 1856 in Franklin Co., MO, but I believe he lived later in Vernon Co. in the Stotesbury area. He was a half brother to my ggrandfather and family tradition is that he was a doctor in the Nevada area. I don't really have other information except that his wife might have been Dorcas, or something similar. I have looked for information for many years and would appreciate any leads. Thanks, Rena McWilliams
Thanks to everyone responding to me about our pending visit to Vernon County in May. You gave me lots of hints, addresses, e-mail addresses, etc. that will be so very helpful when we arrive there. Thanks for the McKee burial information - the one was the brother of my grandfather. The little boy died at age 7 when granddad was only 2 so he would not have remembered him. I'll be "talking" with some of you via e-mail to get more advice and suggestions for our trip.
