Pat, Bacon Township is located on the NE corner of Vernon County, just above Clear Creek Township, right on the edge of St.Clair County. Shell City was the main town in the 1880's, but I don't know if it is still there. Harwood is still on the current map. I think it is about 10 miles from the center of Nevada. Hope that helps. Can someone answer a question for me? Did MO/Vernon County require marriage bonds in 1858? Thanks, Doreen softshew@htcomp.net
Hi list! My roots go back a long time in this part of Missouri. My ggrandfather Jesse A. Lowe died in Sheldon, Vernon County, Missouri in 1917. His obituary stated that he was a member of the famous Nevada Hook and Ladder Company. Does anyone have any information about the company? I'm also trying to find anything about his father Jesse A. Lowe Sr. He married Virginia C. Morris in Vernon County in 1858 and disappears from here. His brother, William Manson Lowe lived in the Vernon County, Clear Creek and Center Township along with his family and his mother Margaret Dudgeon Lowe from about 1858 too. Margaret died in Vernon County about 1871. If anyone has any information regarding any of the above I'd be truly greatful. Thank you! Surnames: ATKINSON VOGELI STROUD MILER MITCHELL Submitter: Leane O'Daniel (leaneodan@yahoo.com) Date: 21 Mar 2002 URL: www.geocities.com/leaneodan Dear My name is Leane ODaniel, from Westfield Indiana. I am on a genealogy quest, searching for information about the linage of my great grandfather Charles Atkinson. He has a very sketchy past and I am now left with searching for any possible clues from the information that I do know. Please note that ANY INFORMATION YOU HAVE IS VERY IMPORTANT TO ME NO MATTER HOW SMALL. Here is what I know: Charles Atkinson Born: 1887 Missouri In the 1900 Census I found a Charles Atkinson who was listed as a step son to a Vogeli family in Vernon County, Nevada, Missouri: Adolp Vogeli from Switzerland Byrd M. Vogeli (Atkinson?) born 1869 in Missouri (had 5 children, 3 living) Earl Vogeli born 1876 in Missouri (Half Brother) Nina Vogeli born 1899 in Missouri (Half Sister) Charles Atkinson born in 1887 Missouri In May 1910 he was a boarder with a George Stroud also born in Missouri. They were boarders at the Miler family at Sylvia, Township Reno County Kansas. The Miler family consisted of: Herford Miler born in 1852, in Iowa Hester Miler born in 1856 in Missouri Pearl Miler born in 1885 in Iowa Shearley Miler born in 1887 in Kansas Hazel Miler born in 1893 in Kansas I found George Stroud (Adopted Son) in the 1900 census in Phelphs County Missouri living with: Sam Mitchell born 1853 in Missouri D. Mitchell born 1869 in Missouri Leara born 1899 in Missouri Geo (adopted son) born in 1889 in Missouri Charles Atkinson Married: August 18, 1910 in Sylvia Kansas to Elsie May Naffziger Charles Atkinson then left Elsie May (while she was pregnant with his child) never to be heard of again. Their daughter (my grandmother was born). I cannot find him in WWI records, and I am almost certain he didnt live long enough to apply for Social Security because I could find no record of that either. Thank you in advance for any information that you may know of, or have. I have enclosed his picture of Charles Atkinson with (his sister?) but I believe the girl to be Nina Vogeli his HALF-sister taken just before he moved to Kansas to work as a farm laborer. Even if you dont know of a family connection, but you know of a family member who is into genealogy please forward this letter to them to see if they can find a connection. Sincerely, Leane ODaniel 1707 B Ashley Wood Dr. Westfield IN 46074 leaneodan@yahoo.com

Is there anyone on the list that is researching this family? Wife, Mary born France, 1847, Elizabeth born 1868 in Iowa and Emma born 1884 in Missouri. Also Claud Amos, he shows up on the 1907 tax lists, have been told he was a barber. Emma Peterson and Claud later marry in Nevada, Mo. Would appreciate any help or ideas. I’ve been told by relatives that a large number of very old Probate Court records were found in the clock tower of the Vernon County Courthouse in Nevada, Mo. They go back at least to the 1870’s, if not farther. The county was going to discard them, but the Historical Society asked for them and received them. They stored them on the third floor of the new Library/Museum. Schoolchildren have volunteered to do some of the work in “sorting them out”, but that isn’t enough. I’M TOLD THAT THEY NEED MONEY FOR THE PROJECT. The organization is: Vernon County Historical Society 231 North Main Street Nevada, MO 64772 If you wish to contact them or learn more about them, their website is: http://www.bushwhacker.org/ Note: I have no connection to the Society and they aren’t even aware of this message. I’m just interested in seeing those records preserved and made available to the public. James R. Baker, Jr. jrbakerjr@yahoo.com .
