    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/kNB.2ACI/768.1 Message Board Post: Hi Verna, Well, I think I can help you out probably more than you'd like to hear!!! I too am related to Joseph...he was my mother's gggrandfather. Notes here say that joseph deserted from the confederate army and either headed north to fight, or went home and refused to fight. His sympathies were for the north. Proceeding note may be too harsh, further reading-this was common in the civil war-it was not considered desertion-men would fight then go home for awhile... ADDITIONAL TO SUBJECT. Notes sent from Aunt Bettie. Another story. Again, it confirms that he deserted...BUT it goes on to say that he went home where his family hid him in the attic until the war was over. Aunt Bettie has pictures of him in his confederate uniform. Also, ones of him as an older man with a beard, ones of Margaret Delawder and of his Gravestone in Arroll,Missouri Cenemtery. Notation in old papers: He was drafted into the Confederates, deserted and joined the Union from which he became a Civil War Veteran. According to notes above...this is now probably unlikely. Last notation from Bettie's notes: "Joseph Bashor shot himself to death, old and ill. He deserted after serving the 1 year term for which he volunteered. Birth:West Virginia not formed until 1863-Joseph born in 1828. (found another note saying he was born 1816?) Also says he spoke fluent German. Marriage:U.S.Census,Tennessee,Washington Co,,Jonesboro;1870 (1Aug);Nat'l Archives; pg 15,Sheet 232; LDS-FHC Film #0,553,067;wife Margaret w/8 children ages 18-4. U.S.Census,Tennessee,WashingtonCo,Jonesboro;1850,1860,1880. Death:Living with son,Amos,at time of death. Joseph deeded his land to Council Grove,Morris Co.,KS in 1889. Military:Civil War,Confederacy,Sgt."G"Co.,29th infantry (Capt.Coulter). "Men From Washington In The Civil War" pg 235;also pg.30.. I think inside all this, in between the lines the truth is somewhere. But you may have some of your questions answered. I think he DID shoot himself. My mother mentioned several times that her mother said he was not quite right when he came back from the fighting. My grandmother was Iva Lorraine, his oldest daughter. However, Iva's mother was Florence PUGH and and the marriage information here says he had 8 kids with "Margaret". Florence and Joseph only had 5 children, Delbert who died at 2, Iva Lorraine, Cora Izella and Harley Harrison. Very possible they were a second marriage after the war years. If he died in 1917, that was 2 years after my mother was born. She was the last of 5 kids. Oh, also according to family records...he was b: 11 Sept 1828 in Lost River, Hardy Co., VA. and d: 25 Mar 1917 in Summerville, Texas Co., Mo. Bur: Arroll, Texas Co., MO. Good Luck, Kitty PS I would be really interested in further information on Iva's side. (The Bashor's) I dont have a lot except from Iva forward.
