I agree that Kim should try..can't hurt! My Ancestry's Red Book says that "In 1883 Missouri passed a state law requiring the recording of births and deaths at the county level. Ten years later this law was inadvertently repealed. Compliance was poor. Most counties do have these registers but there is enormous variation as to how complete and /or comprehensive they are." It also says at the end of the paragraph: "Many of these early county vital records have been microfimed and are available through the Missouri State Archives. Has anyone been successful in getting birth or death records for these years? And if so, where did you find them, please? Marti
We found an 1885 birth record for my husband's grandmother in Mexico, Audrain County, Missouri in the courthouse there. They had birth records for only three years, as I recall. It had excellent information: Record reads: Laswell, female, 3rd child of mother, March 20, 1885, Audrain County, MO. Father: nationality-U.S., place of birth-Monroe County, KY, age 37; Mother: nationality-U.S., placeof birth-Pike County , IL, age 24. Mother: Grace Laswell, maiden name-Dodge, res. Audrain Co, MO; Father: Isaac Laswell, Farmer. W.R.Rodes, MD, Mexico, MO.
