Turn LEFT onto highway 137 and go to highway Y. Turn RIGHT onto highway Y. Go to the SECOND gravel road AFTER passing Clear Springs. Take this gravel road to a "T" in the road. Take the RIGHT side of the "T". At the next "T" take the LEFT side of the "T". At the THIRD "T" (or fork in the road) which is the intersection of this road and highway NN you will find the cemetery just NORTH of the intersection between the two roads. ............ As to a city of Pierce... I do not believe there is a city of Pierce -I could not locate one on a map. ............. I have only used the Houston courthouse for land deeds- which they were very helpful with. ............. Houston has a small library. It does have a microfilm machine -and some early years of the "Houston Herald" on film. It also has a small genealogy section at the library. ................ Another place to stop for genealogy is the Houston Genealogy Society Room (downtown Houston). They have albums of obits that are very helpful as well as other books on the shelfs that you might find of interst. If he had sons, it could have been one of them. James's sons did not marry anyone by that name. Gilbert married Sarah E. and I don't know her maiden name. I don't know of a spouse for James Calvin, but he would have been about 7 or 8 years old at that time and the other son, Charles T., was not born till 1887. I do know that his brother went to Missouri with him, but I don't know his name or any other statistics except that he came from Cuba, Alcorn County, Mississippi. I don't know if his mother was cherokee or choctaw, but heard that she did not go to Oklahoma on the trail of tears. This information may be invalid, however, as my Great great grandfather was deeded land in Oklahoma because of his Indian heritage, but never claimed it. Now I cannot find out about this land and, since I don't have a name for his mother, I cannot find anything about the family in the roles.

I still didn't find a marriage date for Ollie and Lola...but this first record should help: Houston Herald January 28, 1904 Flatwoods Notes Mr and Mrs Ollie Powell live on the lookout farm and will be pleased to see many of their friends. Marriage License Issued this week March 30, 1904: O E Murfin, Hartshorn to Sallie A Crabtree, Hartshorn Houston Herald September 14, 1905 Flatwood Notes On the 30th of August the family and friends of Mrs. George Murfin gave her a suprise party. A sumptous meal was set, and an immense supply of cake adorned the table. Her father, Mr. Lowell presented her witha fine hat, her daughter with a nice apron, and several others gave presents. The occasion was Mrs. Murfin's birthday and will long be remembered as a pleasant affair. July 14, 1904 Happy Hollow Mrs. Maggie Murfin and Mrs. A. T. Cloninger went to Summersville this week. Miss Bessie Murfin was still in St. Louis G.W. Murfin and family are talking of going to St. Louis to live. G.W. Murfin broke his binder while cutting C. E. Murfin's wheat, which has disappointed several of the farmers which were depending on him cutting their wheat. October 13, 1904 Flatwoods Notes Dr. Powell is erecting a nice house on his land near the silver mine cave. JF Cross sold a nice span of small mares to Ordie Murphin. June 8, 1905 FROM C E MURFIN Independence Colorado May 25, 1905 Editor Herald: If you will allow me space in your valuable paper for a few items, I will give you a few pickups, as gathered by hearsay, observation and otherwise here and around Independence. Well, I have just returned from taking a look at Pike's Peak, accompanied by my wife, son and father. The valleys beneath are carpeted with a luxurious growth of of grass and the summit of the peak being covered with snow, presented to the eye of a Missourian a grand scene. We also took a view of the Independence depot which was blown up during the strike and resulted in the death of 15 and 20 being wounded. It was a double decked building and it was riddled from one side to the other. You talk of your fine spring weather, plowing corn and sunshine in Missouri, we are blessed with neither here, no corn to plow nor hot sunshine, but we have pure fresh air direct from the mountains and plenty of ice water to drink without buying ice. I have been here three months and have never seen it rain yet, but it snows about every other day. It is getting the time of year that we have our spring showers here just like it is in Missouri, only it snows here instead of rains. Gold mining is the chief industry in this part of the Rockies, there being no farming done closer than 8 or 10 miles from here. The people in this country think that President Roosevelt is not a crack shot; at any rate, he didn't get all the bears while on his bear hunt in the Rockies, as a 16 year old boy killed one last Friday and the day following his 15 year old sister killed one that weighed 700 pounds. Geo. W. Murfin who came to Colorado for his health is much improved. This is a great country for anyone afflicted with asthma, eczema, or any blood disease. Walter Shults, formerly of Dent County, is employed here driving a grocery wagon. He received the sad news that his brother Raymond , who is in Green Briar Tenn., was very ill and not expected to live. Henry Schults, a former Dent county boy, is also here. The graduated ladies of Independence gave a grand entertainment at this place last night, which was well attended. The Portland mine, the largest in the camp and one of the largest in the world and also the richest in the world, sold a few days ago for $15,000,000. This mine employed about 500 men and had about 35 miles of track underground. C. E. Murfin They must have returned after that, or a relative with the same name, as I found a C E Murfin who was a democratic candidate for Judge in 1936, with Mrs. Maggie Murfin as a commitee member. I hope this helps! Laura

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/kNB.2ACI/1943.1 Message Board Post: Hello Harvey: Houston Herald January 26, 1950 Ira Deeds, son of John and Ida Deeds, was born in Iowa on January 29, 1872; departed this life in the Waynesville Hospital on January 11, 1950. Age at the time of going was 77 years, 11 months and 12 days. When quite young he moved with this parents to the north part of the state, where he lived until he was about 14, then he, with his grandparents, Mr and Mrs Haines, moved to Texas County, where he has since lived. He was united in marriage to Pearl Dixon, of Yukon, in 1901and with the blessings of God about them they have had the privilege of almost half a century of living together. The happy memories of these years will lend happiness to the years that may come for this devoted companion. He was of a family of eight, but had never lived near his relatives since he was young; so thru the years they had lost track of each other. They believe he was the last of the family. Mrs. Deed's brothers and sisters have filled this place in his life and he has loved them as though they were his own. He had been sick for some time, although it was possible for him to do some things that he enjoyed doing; but this attack was more severe than any other had been and while his going was shock, it was expected. He had made many friends in the community where he had lived, was patient in his illness, and could be completely depended upon. The following are grieving for him today: The devoted companion Mrs. Paul Deeds; a number of cousins and many friends. Funeral service were held at the Big Creek Church, Friday January 13, Mrs. Ray Miles officiating. Interment following at the Big Creek Cemetery under direction of the Elliott Funeral Home. I hope this helps with your questions! Good Luck! Laura

We have thought "forever" that Nancy Jane SULLINS' maiden name was PRUITT. I just recently discovered her death certificate online and see that it was her mother who had the maiden name of PREWITT (or PRUITT). Since Nancy's husband provided the information to complete the death certificate, I have to accept that we've been mistaken. Since I'm among those who have contributed to circulating the incorrect maiden name, I thought I should post the note among your online genealogical database (and others) so the corrected maiden name would start getting out to genealogists. The Ramseys were residents of Texas Cty since the 1860s and they had 15-16 children. Their daughter married a Smith in 1887 or 1888. They had two children both born in/around Roubidoux, MO. Viola Mae b. 1890 (who married Charley Lee Jackson of the John Clayborn Jackson family) and a son Frank b. 1892. By abt 1894 Margaret had married Frank Saladin (who adopted the children). Supposedly Margaret made the run into Oklahoma Territory in 1896 and lived in Woods County from 1896 until her death in 1941. Saladin was an onery character and forbade any talk of Smith or Jackson families. Family stories say that Smith was part Indian (Cherokee) and that a grandmother was on the Trail of Tears. All indian records were destroyed by one of the sons of Viola as he was always hassled for being a "half-breed" in Oklahoma in the 1940s. He is still living and still refusing to discuss any indian blood. Oddly enough he wants the picture of "Trails End" on his tombstone. I guess in the end he wants to acknowledge his indian heritage. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
