Good Morning! Just to catch you up on what's going on... The Forsyth cleanup for Shadow Rock Park on Saturday had a good turnout; I believe there were at least 75 people there, groups ranging from those of us in the historical society to Girl Scouts and ROTC. Rick, Greg, Ingrid, Jo, Phyllis, and I worked on the east end of the north side, where the cabin is, getting the grounds and cabin itself in shape for the Bald Knobber re-enactment on 12 Oct. Other volunteers worked on the tennis courts, restrooms, fairgrounds and barns. Rick continued working on the cabin area Sunday morning, power-washing the community plaques and the shelter floor of the set. We will need more folks turning out this Saturday--the plaques still need some paint and touch-up (we have the paint, will need ladders), an inventory of the cabin contents needs to be done, and the old cookstove in the cabin needs to be treated for rust and blacked. Much of the grounds cleanup itself is done. Ingrid was a casualty--she won't thank me for this, but y'all would surely sympathize--during the grounds clean-up. Trimming vines and shrub branches from the cabin, belatedly she realized that one vine in particular was poison ivy, and so she spent Sunday and Monday treating the results. On Sunday, the quarterly meeting for the White River Valley Historical Society was held. Meeting for sandwiches at 1 PM, the official business began at 2. Gordon McCann of Springfield brought Taney Countian Jim Beeler and played some wonderful music on acoustic guitar and fiddle, performing many of the same songs our ancestors did. At 3:30, rehearsals for the Bald Knobber reenactment began down in the park. Y'all that live in the area--and I know there are quite a few--missed out on some great "fellowship", for lack of a better term. I've not had a chance to verify this with Jeff (Cemetery Committee Chair), who was out of town over the weekend, but went ahead (sorry, Jeff!) and set a Cemetery Workshop for Monday, 16 Sep, at 6 PM at the Old Jail. The next Cemetery Hop will be Saturday, 21 Sep, at 8 AM, to meet at the Jail, as well. We've been making good progress on the cemetery work, and there's some exciting developments within the committee. Congratulations go out to Curtis and Sara Copeland for the birth of their daughter, Olivia, on 3 September, 2002, in Springfield, MO. Curtis is the Historic Sites Chairman for the historical society, and performs as Nat Kinney in the Bald Knobber reenactment. We are going to need volunteers for the White River Valley Gathering, to be held 12 October, 2002. If you can help us out, please let me know--you do not have to be a member of the society to come "play" with us! Gotta get ready for work (the paying job)! Y'all have a GREAT week! Don't forget to check out the "Events" section of the WRVHS website frequently--now that Greg's shown me a quick and relatively painless way to upload pages, it's fairly easy for me to keep that updated!
