Also looking in Taney Co. for Ruth (Ruthie) Risley....possibly Angeline Cheek's mother. Remember...James Cheek is Steve Cheek's g-gpa. (Boone Co. Ark.) Anything abt James Cheek in Taney Co. would be GREATLY appreciated!! All I have of him living there is what he states in his pension's. I'd love, when we go back down to Taney, to go his old place there! If we can ever find it. I'd also like to go to Isabell's grave if we can ever find her too. I have several affidavits of folks who stated they were by her bedside when she died. Nothing is said as to where they buried her tho...what cemetery or if buried on the farm. 3. I too am looking for the Cupp's and Bilyeu's, but I'm also looking for relatives of Abe Sportsman who married Mary Ann Cupp and are buried in the Meadows Cemetery. One of their children William Grover Sportsman married Grace Davis who are buried in the Spokane Cemetery, they are my grandparents. One of their daughter's Ruth Sportsman is my mother. Ruth was first married to Lynn Ashley Baker 1939-July 1954, then to Ralph Bond Dec. 1954. They were still married when they departed this world. Any help would be appreciated. I'm not sure who Abe Sportsman's father was, but I do know that Mary Ann Cupp's father was Simpson Cupp and his wife was Sarilda McDaniel(s)? What ever help I can get would be appreciated on any of these families. [Cupp, Bilyeu, Sportsman, Davis and McDaniel(s)] Mary Ann Cupp-Sportsman's brother Isaac Cupp married Nancy White, Isaac and Nancy had many children, only one of whom I had the privilege to have met. Nettie Cupp-Bilyeu and my grandfather William Sportsman were 1st cousin's. Thanks for taking the time to read this. I've read the list information for about a year now and I do believe this is my first posting. My ancestors are Charles "Charlie" White who married Anna Flippo, had my G-G Grandmother Mahala, who married a Potts, then Bates, then Reynolds, and then last a Thomason a few years before her death. Any connection, believe they lived in Boone Co. at the end of their lives. Any connection? Bonnie in CA.

    1. [MOTANEY] a great movie for historians
    2. Vonda Sheets
    3. Hey, howdy! You know, Ingrid is just the best source for wonderful, fantastic movies. She's been hounding me for months to get the movie "Songcatcher", which is set in 1907 in the western Carolina mountains. She brought her copy over tonight, knowing that was the only way to get me to sit in front of a TV and watch it for any length of time. Now Greg has a new movie to be nuts about...there's "Ride With The Devil" with Tobey Maguire and Jewel (also an Ingrid idea), set in the Civil War on the MO-KAN border. "The Jack Bull", with John Cusack and John Goodman, set in 1890 Wyoming. Of course, the various Westerns. And now..."Songcatcher", with Janet McTeer and Aidan Quinn. You know, I have a wonderful husband. Not only does he not get too upset when I neglect him for my various projects, he takes stuff on a different tangent and just runs with it. LOL I started him on the Big Smith (that's a hillbilly band made up of cousins of purt near all of us, the Bilyeus of Christian county) craze a couple years ago, and he's still trying to wear those dang CDs out. We make rag dolls, and he's right there, cutting strips and coming up with suggestions for them. We have come up with a Bald Knobber rag doll he's very excited about, too. Some people have a lot of luck. Others have to marry it! LOL V ListMom for MO-AR-WRV http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~moarwrv/

    3. Thanks to all who've sent me personal responses about my posts earlier this week...believe it or not, it helps a great deal to hear from every simgle one of you--I save all of your letters in a special file when you write me on something like this. I should remember to go back through that file on occasions I'm feeling low. Greg woke me this morning with the news of the Columbia. I watched the news channels for a little while, then decided to read my morning paper...and it made the news of LeBron James' ineligibility for high school sports the rest of this year, and "The Bachelor" Springfieldian Aaron Buerge's break-up with his fiancee' seem awful trivial...especially in view of the small, back-page news release of the Columbia's scheduled return to Earth this morning. How different tomorrow's newspaper will be. Historic events sometimes seem so small when they are actually happening, and you wonder if there'll be any impact on others far away, or on future generations. No doubt today's will have a lot of impact...I'm sorry for the families of those brave people. You tend to forget that travel in space is still fraught with peril, considering the apparent ease shown with details on most missions. We take a lot for granted. 1. [MOTANEY] Garber
    2. Vonda Sheets
    3. Hello again. A couple of weeks ago, my friend and business partner Rick Swan asked if any of us had heard anything about Garber. Rick had no family who lived there, but like others I know who ride horses and venerate the history of Roark Valley, Garber is one of those places that spoke to his heart. Never a particularly big village, the old John Ross store building ("Old Matt" of the book "Shepherd of the Hills"), a few houses and barns--that was it. Near a railroad trestle above the fork of Roark Creek, it was secluded in a little glen that could be a little difficult to reach. I myself have never been there. Close, on the scenic railroad trip you can take from Branson, and just below the fork of Roark--but never have I seen it. And I guess the opportunity is now gone. Rick saw the buildings back in November. The land was sold since then, and the rumor is that the day after the papers were signed and the sale closed, the new owner, StoneBridge Village (an exclusive golf course with fancy houses that owns a great deal of property in the immediate area) went in and bulldozed every thing left. Others who would know claim that books, papers, you name it, were still in the buildings, and nothing was taken out before the destruction began. Those items are now in a big hole that had been dug for the purpose. There was no announcement, no sales, like Branson did with the venerable buildings on the Lakefront. Just outright destruction. I know why they did it--to discourage those who visited the past respectfully, in fear those same people would continue to trespass and some sort of lawsuit would happen. That isn't unreasonable, I suppose, but as we who care about such things are continuously pushed into the corner, we are running out of the tangible assets of our pasts...my grandmother was born in Garber. Most of the places she has lived in Taney county have been destroyed in the name of "progress". I'm beginning to feel like what I think matters doesn't really matter after all. For all the progress on cemeteries, for all the watchdog patrols my friends and family continue, for all the work we do to preserve the places and things of our ancestors...well. Those of you who don't have family ties to Garber, or whose research that has led you to this small, small, area in southern MO...it is only the middle of the process. As more people move here, wanting new houses and businesses and getting bored by looking at hills, the old places are disappearing at a rate faster than my kids are growing...and TJ is nearly my height now, with a men's size 10 foot. Where is the sense of preserving our history that seems to be everywhere else in the country but here? Vonda ListMom for MO-AR-WRV http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~moarwrv/
