    1. [MOTANEY] update on Snapp Bald
    2. Vonda Sheets
    3. Here's the latest: I didn't realize until after I left the house yesterday that it was the 24th. However, whatever meeting was to take place last night was likely the county commissioners, and they don't really have the authority or jurisdiction here. There are committees at state levels over this sort of thing, changing names of geological features, etc. They pass recommendations onto the national level, which then usually follows whatever the regional/state committee suggests. A former director of the historical society, Gordon McCann, sits on the MO committee, so "Miz Jo", Jo Albers, prez of the historical society, called him yesterday afternoon. Mr. McCann said the next meeting is in May, so your letters in support would still be valuable. But he also assured Jo that the name change--which would affect maps, etc.--would not be taken lightly, and they usually don't happen on something like this. Susan Snapp Bearden is going to be filing at state level to make the name legal, so that no one can do something like this in the future without a lot of expense. So there you go. I still have petitions out, and I will be turning them into Susan in the near future. Have a GREAT Week! ListMom for MO-AR-WRV http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~moarwrv/

    1. [MOTANEY] more history going?
    2. Vonda Sheets
    3. Okay, gang! Here's where you can rally 'round the preservation efforts beginning to really take shape in Taney county.... I received the following email attached to another e from a cousin of mine (a couple times over, of course), who is also a Snapp descendant. Please read afterwards on what you can do to help (besides what's in the e)...it's extremely important. >>Hello everyone, I need your help to stop an effort to change the name of "Snapp's Bald" . Residents now owning property on and near "Snapp's Bald" in Taney County, MO are wanting to change the name of the mountain top. The Snapp's still living in Taney County are distressed that the name my be changed. A dentist from Branson, MO is heading a campaign to stop the change of names from occuring. He is securing letters from people stating that they do not want the name changed. For those who missed the reunion in Taney County, MO last year, "Snapp's Bald" is the site of the formation of the "Bald Knobbers", a vigilantee group that was originally formed to support law enforcement in Taney County but soon became their own form of justice. At last years reunion we looked at several sites corresponding to the Snapp's of Taney County and the Bald Knobbers. We actually stood on the street corner in Kirbeyville, MO where the Bald Knobbers hired gunman, Wash Middleton, shot and killed Sam Snapp. Time is very short. I write this letter from Phoenix, AZ where I am attending a Promise Keepers Pastor's Conference. Taney County will be meeting this Monday, February 24, 2003, to discuss the name change. What we need from you is a written letter stating that you do not wish the name to be change and for the mountain to retain the name of "Snapp's Bald". The letter needs to include your name, address and telephone number. It should be addressed to Dr. Wayne Davis, 487 Sourwood Mountain Drive, Branson, MO 65616. Include in the body of the letter, your desire to not change the name and any reason why. (i.e Family legacy, Taney County History, Its always been called Snapp's Bald, I've spent many years walking on the mountain, It honors the memory of Harrison Snapp-a leading citizen of Taney County, I remember when . . . ). Also state how you are related to the Snapp family. Sign your name to the letter, than fax it to 1-417-336-3670. Susan Bearden, Irven Snapp's daughter, will make sure the letters get to Dr. Davis before the Monday meeting. If you do not have a fax machine, take the letter to an instant printing company or a "Mail and More." They usually provide fax service for a small charge. Thank you for your prompt help in this matter. Jacob Lynn Snapp<< I called Susan Snapp Bearden to verify this information, and it is true. I'm not sure yet on exactly when the meeting is taking place, but apparently this is at the MO state level. NOW...if you are not a Snapp, or a Taney descendant, it doesn't matter. I know that you are concerned about the inordinate amount of destruction of our past here. I can take your email letters (vonda@copper-turtle.com), but it would be much better for a snail mail letter or your presence. You can send the snail mail letters (for those of you who don't live here) in care of Susan Snapp Bearden, 1638 E. Hwy 76, Branson, MO 65616. Finally, this is a chance in which each and every one of you can have a say in what is going on in the Branson area. The committee which decides on these things can be and has been influenced by letters, phone calls, and more. I needn't tell you there are no signs, etc., in the region signifying the locations of Bald Knobber activity, although we hope to change that some day. I also needn't remind you of the documentary we are currently working on, about the BK. I would never have the nerve to move to an area and want to name a geological feature after myself. The gall of some people is frightening. I thank you ahead of time. ListMom for MO-AR-WRV http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~moarwrv/

    1. [MOTANEY] George Stalcup and Family Moved to Taney Co., MO in ca. 1839
    2. George Stalcup, son of Tobias Stalcop, moved to Taney Co., MO in ca. 1839 with a number of his adult children and their respective families. The known children of George and Susana (Hanley) Stalcup are as follows: George Stalcup 1770 - 1858 +Susana Hanley Sally Stalcup 1796 - +William Bradley - 1842 John Wesley Stalcup 1798 - +Nancy Hastings 1802 - James Stalcup 1799 - 1854 +Rebecca Tobias (Obedium) Stalcup 1800 - +Dianna Chaney George Stalcup, Jr. 1802 - Peggy Stalcup 1804 - Delila Stalcup 1806 - +Robert A. Thomas Stallcup was separate from his parents at that time and did not made that move as he was already living in AR at the time. In ca. 1842, he moved his family from AR to TX. Several of his nieces and nephews, from Taney Co., sought his support when they moved to TX as young adults. One was George W. Stalcup, the son of Simon Peter Stalcup, who married Susan Jane Stallcup, the daughter of Thomas Stallcup. Am most interested in the Stalcup family members of Taney Co., MO and would enjoy exchanging information on descendants of George Stalcup. Herb Cunningham HerbCunnin@aol.com
