    2. Does anyone have access to an index of the 1890 Veteran's census for Taney Co.? I am wondering if it could be checked to see if my g-g-grandfather, Frederick William Carsten is located there. One of his son's married in 1890 in Taney Co., which is more evidence the family had to have been there, as my g-grandparents - William Clayborn Carsten & Sarah Lucinda "Sada" Stiffler had to have met somewhere as the Stiffler family was from Forsyth. ~gina thomas patterson~ Visit my homepage at http://hometown.aol.com/ginaburningsky/myhomepage/business.html <A HREF="http://hometown.aol.com/ginaburningsky/myhomepage/business.html">BURNING SKY ENTERPRISES</A>

    3. DAR Index to Taney Co,MO marriages shows following marriage record even though the spellings are not as you show or as are shown in 1910 Taney Co,MO Census Index: P. B. CARSLER(sic) over 21 of Bradleyville & Leddie FILLBECK over 18 of Bradleyville married 24 May 1890 Marriage Book 2, page 186 I don't have copy of actual Census pages but here is what is shown in Index to 1910 Taney Co,MO census for the family: Swan Township, Family #176 CARSTEN, Philip 52 -MO-Germany-TN md 1 time Lydia 31-MO-MO-MO md 1 time, md 19 yrs, had 7 children, 6 living William T. 19-MO-MO-MO son Louis F. 17-MO-MO-MO son Benjamine F. 14-MO-MO-MO son Mary 12-MO-MO-MO dau Edward 9-MO-MO-MO son Turner 3-MO-MO-MO son There is NO indication in this Index that these were step-chilidren. The May 1890 marriage shown above would work out correctly as long as the 1910 Census was made prior to May 1910, and the front page of the Index shows that Census was made 15 April 1910. I looked through the 7 Volumes of Indexes to Taney County Cemeteries compiled by Janice Soutee Looney but no record under the name Philip---only one related to this family was burial in Ozarks Memorial Park Cem. for Benjamin F. 3. Thanks for asking, Victoria, but my HOUK line only arrived in America 1830 Buffalo, NY and from there to Indiana. In cholera epidemic of 1849, almost every member of the family died except my gggrandfather 7 one son. By 1854 gggrandfather died and son Jacob HOUK,Jr went to Minnesota where he md, then to IOWA & from where he served in Civil War & prisoner in Andersonville. In 1868 took his family from Iowa and moved to Oregon. So far as I know, none of his siblings survived the cholera epidemic so I don't think there's much chance of there being any relationship to the OK family. Sure wish there was a connection!!! 2. Thank you Doug for the look-up, the "step" children issue had bothered me alot, and now I know it is incorrect and these children are Phillip's. 2. Geez - Well, we have one in the family along the same lines - except that when my stepdad came home a three sheets to the wind, my mom stitched up in her brand-new muslim sheets she had just washed, ironed & put on the bed, and proceeded to whale the tar out of him with a clothes hanger. She then unstitched up, and went on about her business of getting a good nite's sleep. He woke up the next day feeling sore all over ~ and didn't have a clue. Of course, Mom got several day's worth of rubbin' it in about what happens when a man drinks too much! ~gina~ Visit my homepage at http://hometown.aol.com/ginaburningsky/myhomepage/business.html <A HREF="http://hometown.aol.com/ginaburningsky/myhomepage/business.html">BURNING SKY ENTERPRISES</A>

    2. Bonnie, I am descended from Calvin Parton who was James Wesley and Edna Bates Parton's Father. I have a bit of information on James Wesley other than death dates. You are more than welcome to the information I have. I think I also have a picture of James Wesley. The 1897 Mincy School Picture would have been too late for our Parton's I believe as I did not recognize anyone in the pictures. It did however confirm the church that is still standing in Mincy is the same as the one in the picture. Tonya [email protected]

    3. Howdy! Well, the snow's melting, and we got lots of mud. I wonder if there was so much mud back in the days before a lot of dirt was hauled in? Those of you who live close by--Tuesday, 23 Jan, 2001, at 6 pm, a meeting is being held at Una's Cafe (remember, Ideana?) for folks interested in preserving the history of the WRV, Taney County in particular. We are eating at 6, and someone'll probably start talkin' about 6:45 or so. Two purposes for the meeting, which will be announced on both Hometown Radio and in the local papers: 1) to let folks know about Outlaw Roundup, to be held 19 May, 2001. We still need volunteers and donors. If y'all don't think you have time to get involved, I understand...but please remember, even a little bit of help goes a long way, and is greatly appreciated. 2) There will be a questionnaire for folks to fill out in regards to their interests in history, be it genealogy or cultural or whatever floats your boat. I'm thinking of starting an ad campaign for cemetery cleanups--"Do you like to garden? Tired of rearranging your over-landscaped yards? Come work at a cemetery, and landscape "new ground!" or summat lak thet. Me not being a gardener, I don't understand the compulsion to try out new kinds of flowers in my rocky flowerbeds. Matter of fact, folks'll tell you I can kill silk houseplants--dust keeps the sunlight from getting on them! All kidding aside, come join us 23 Jan. There are lots of folks doing more and more projects, be it cemeteries or schools or document preserving...and sometimes, folks get discouraged, thinking they're the only ones. Some have some really great ideas for fundraisers and the like, and having other people to bounce ideas off of helps. Hope to see you there!
