I don't know about April 22, 1899; but, on April 27, 1899 .... "the worst disaster ever - visited the little city." It is called a cyclone according to extractions quoted from The Newtown Chronicle (newspaper) at that time. My source is a book called: "Our Own Little Town Newtown Missouri 1858-1983". It was published in 1983 by The Milan Standard (newspaper) and was compiled by the Newtown Quasquicentennial Association. It is a fantastic book with lots of history of the area near Newtown. I don't know what area of Sullivan Co. you are asking about but, whatever happened in Newtown probably impacted all of the county as well as neighboring counties. The book is not indexed, so I can not offer look-ups; but, regarding this disaster, there is an extensive list of losses of life and property. I would be willing to copy that to the list if it is wanted. JoAnn
