    1. Lookup Request
    2. Hello all, Is there anyone out there that may be able to assist me in looking up the middle name of Henry B. McDowell, born: 1879 MO, died: 1926 Sullivan Co., MO and who married: Minnie Lura YARDLEY. I am not able to come down to Milan myself to try to do this. I am hoping someone out there may be doing their own research and might be able to look it up as they do their own. Thanks so much! 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/jNB.2ACI/232.441 Message Board Post: I don't know if this Lou (Lorena) is the same as the one you mention... but I have a Louisa Adelina Jennings in my file who married Elijah Riley Bailey. I have her parents as William Jonathan Jennings and Nancy Jane Watson. Sounds like it might be who you are talking about, but I have different dates for him... born 1/28/1820 in KY d 4/24/1886 Sullivan Co., MO., and the Jonathan instead of Jackson. I don't know the names of Williams' parents, but his father was born in England and his mother in KY. Here are the notes I have on William: William's father was born in England and his mother was born in KY. This family came to Sullivan Co., MO from Matoon, Illinois. They crossed the Mississippi River at Quincy, Illinois by ferry with their cattle and belongings. They settled in the Loeffler area where they farmed and raised their family. Two of their babies were buried in the garden, which is now farming area on the Johnny Cook Farm. William died on april 24, 1886, in Sullivan Co., MJO and his wife, Nancy, died there in 1900. The daughter of Louisa & Elijah Bailey was Leona Melvina Bailey who married John Calvin Smith 2/19/1891. He was killed when the tree he was cutting fell on him and crushed him, on his 41st birthday, on 1/19/1905. Leona married twice more... to Jack Walker & Virgel Head. Not sure which was 2nd and which was 3rd. I have no other children listed for her, but there could be some I don't know about. The daughter she had with John Smith, Bonnie Marie Smith, b 11/20/1901 married Ernest "Mike" Pope, 8/25/1919 in Kirksville, Adair Co., MO. They had 12 Pope children. I don't know why I even have this in my file... I guess because my mother-in-law was a Pope and I'm trying to connect her line to the one in Sullivan Co. That's the only reason I can think of, because I see no relationship to me when I pull up a kinship report. I haven't read the rest of the responses you've received. Perhaps someone else has already told you about this daughter. What do you think? Joanne Scobee Morgan morgans4@swbell.net

The family was living in Greene County, IL in 1850 census, but moved to northern Missouri in 1856, where some additional children were born. I believe James was 7th of 8 children born, likely in Sullivan County, where David's parents (Joseph & Mary A. (James) Stanley) settled. David also had a brother James, but he died in Illinois while the family was moving to Missouri. In same family, there was a James B. Stanley born in Sullivan County on 2 July 1860 and James Russel Stanley born there on 2 April 1894. Ken Camber (hapnken@teleport.com)

I have recently found an Elias Steele, Sophia Steele and Rachel A. Steele listed in the 1870 Sullivan Co. census. I have spent many hours trying to find Rachel Ann Oliver, who married Manuel James Morris Steele (or some combination of those names). They had these boys: James Morris, John Lemuel, Lee Oliver, Finis Maynard, supposedly somewhere in Mo. Do any of these names sound familiar? With your great-grandfather having 4 names, like my great-great grandfather, I thought maybe there was a connection. Hope to hear from you. Debbie Johnson bilbillj@aol.com

    1. WWI Letter (McDowell, Long, Hostetter, Clein, etc.)
    2. The following is a letter written by my great uncle, Alvin Neil MCDOWELL, as he prepared to leave for training at the end of WWI. He was the son of Wid and Mary YARDLEY MCDOWELL. His mother had died of typhoid fever just a couple years prior to this letter and his brothers and sisters were scattered to relatives. This was a result of his father being unwilling to raise the younger children by himself. His parents never got along, and his father had abandoned his mother and the younger children near Heber Springs, Arkansas where she became sick and died. They were all originally from Sullivan County, MO with many of the children ending up there after their mother's death. Alvin was born Aug. 21, 1899 and died on Sept. 16, 1961. I do not know anything about his time of service following this letter. I have left all of the mispellings and capitalization as it was in the letter. He also mentions several of his friends including Glen LEACH, Layton HIGH, Harry CLEIN (son of Lee CLEIN), Newton LONG, and Henry HOSETETTERS (sic). Thought you might enjoy it or find it of use: Trenton, MO Sunday April 21, 1918 Dear father, Brothers & Sisters how are all there? this leaves me feeling fine and I only hope you are all the same. I left Milan yesterday at five oclock. and I have been here in trenton since then. But I leave here for Kansas City on the 7.30 oclock train tomorrow. and from there on to the Jefferson Barracks, at St Louis. Very likely you know this by now But this letter will help to take away a little of the hurt that is why I am writing it. as I write this letter there is no bitterness in my mind against any of you. and please dont think I have done this to hurt my relatives for if there ever was any Bitterness in my mind it is all gone now. I have been fighting this back a long time, at least 2 years. You girls know that I always did want to be a soldier. and if you had all been here, I would have enlisted just the same. I passed a fine examination this morning, stripped naked., I weigh 193 lbs. and am 5 ft 10 inches tall Barefooted. I enlisted as a machinists helper in an automobile repair shop. at Jefferson Barracks I will get from 6 weeks to 2 months drilling then they will send me to Texas. and after I learn about auto engines if I want to go Uncle Sam will send me to France as a truck driver. I sure am proud to be in my uncles service. Glen Leach and Layton High are both coming soon. it is known almost beyond doubt that Harry Clein, Lee Cleins boy has been killed in france. they got the word sunday april 14 in the newspaper. he is the first Sullivan County boy to either be killed or wounded in action. I met one of my old friends in Trenton last night. he is Newton Long. he was at McClanahans when I worked there April one year ago. I am eating at the best hotel in Trenton, and also rooming at just as good a place as uncle sam can furnish. he has paid all my expenses since I have been here. I am the nearest satisfied now that I have ever been yet, just as quick as I can draw three months pay I will send the $10.00 to you pappa, and the $5.00 to Uncle Pet. tell them all hello for me. I shall have my picture taken when I get to camp. then I will send you one. we have got a fine rain, and right on top of that a snow which is 12 in deep here in Trenton. it began sometime Friday night and fell untill almost noon today. But the tempture has been so warm that a lot of it has melted now. you know how bad Henry Hosetetters Eyes were. it was just the lids, for he is one of the Best shots in the camp where he is at. he knocked out 4 out of 5 Bullseyes in practice, and they say he is a good soldier. well I will write again when I get settled in camp so goodby and dont worry about me for I had just as well fight for old Glory as the next man. I will close with Love I am a Son and Brother Alvin >>>Letter submitted by Marsha Sears

I can't connect a Thomas Alexander Cochran to either Robert or James Cochran of Sullivan, or any of their known siblings in other states. Lucinda Shatto, d/o Zachariah & Marrillah (Clem) Shatto, was born about 1843, appears in the 1850 census, but not in the 1860 with her parents. I had thought she must have died before 1860. Had she married that young? Any idea where she lived after marrying? Robert Cochran was born in 1803, James his brother in 1816, sons of Alexander Cochran of Co. Derry, Ireland. I'm wondering if your Thomas Alexander could have been a nephew of Robert and James of Sullivan.
