Posted on: Sullivan County, MO Obituaries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Mo/SullivanObits/10116 Surname: McClaskey, Clapp ------------------------- IN MEMORY OF Albert I. McClaskey, who died at his home in Milan, Mo., November 15, 1920, at 1:30 a.m., aged 41 years, 4 months, and 5 days. THE VILLIAGE BLACKSMITH. Under a spreading chestnut tree The villiage smithy stands; The smith, a mighty man is he, With large and sinewy hands; And the muscles of this brawny arms Are strong as iron bands. His hair is crisp, and black and long. His face is like the tan; His brow is wet with honest sweat, He earns whate'er he can, And looks the whole world in the face, For he owes not any man. Week in, and week out, from morn til night, You can hear his bellows blow; You can hear him swing his heavy sledge, With measured beat and slow, Like a sexton riging the villiage bell, When the evening sun is low. And children comgin home from school Look in at the open door; The love to see the flaming forge, And hear the bellows roar, And catch the burning sparks that fly Like chaff from a threshing-floor. HE goes on Sunday to church, And sits among his boys; He hears the parson pray and preach, He hears his daughter's voice, Singing in the village choir, And it makes his heart rejoice. Toiling-rejoicing, -sorrowing, Onward through life he goes; Each morning sees some task begin Each evening sees it close, Something attempted, something done, Has earned a night's resose. Thanks, thanks to thee, my worthy friend, For the lesson thou hast taught! Thus at the flaming forge of life Our fortunes must be wrought; Thus on its sounding anvil shaped Each burning deed and thought. (Editor's Note: We are not going to write the usual obituary notice of A.I. McClskey's death, but republish this beautiful little poem from Longfellow which we believe is much more appropriate and which Albert would have liked (had he been on earth) much better than the usual notice. Hello Listers - while looking thru the 1880 Sullivan Co., MO census I found the following Cookman family: In Polk twp, page 36, visitation 423: Cookman, Lee, age 25, Farmer, b. VA, father b. VA, mother b. VA. Cookman, Margart J., age 21, Keeping House, b. MO, father b. VA, mother born MO Cookman, Sarah E., age 4, b. MO, father b. VA, mother b. MO Cookman, Sophia J., age 2, b. MO, father b. VA, mother b. MO Cookman, Belle, age 3mo, b. March, b. MO, father b. VA, mother b. MO In the Sullivan Co. Early Marriage listes a Walter L. Cookman to West, Margaret J. on Dec. 20, 1874. I am guessing that Walter L. and Lee are the same person. Can anyone tell me the parents of Walter L. or Lee Cookman. I seem to remember corresponding with someone concerning this person, but I have misplaced their E-mail address. Dot Dotsipe@aol.com

Good Morning all, I was on this list awhile back kind of lurking.. and then dropped it because I figured that my information about my family being in Sullivan County must have been wrong. Last night I received a phone call from my grandmother's 1/2 sister. I want to say right now.. I had no idea my grandmother had any 1/2 siblings. I don't think it was a secret, because the ladies name rings a bell.. I just don't think I ever asked.. The lady sounds wonderful and just full of life. It amazes me that her father is my great grandfather!!! She's going to be sending me a bunch of family history stuff in the mail soon. But, last night she told me that on my great grandfather's death certificate the people had put his mother's name down, mispelled. That was a "big" clue in going about finding anyone. I went to the genweb last night for Sullivan County and found my great great grandparents: McClaskey, Robert to Clapp, Rosetta on Jan 06, 1887. Her real name was Rozella, except that I am beginning to wonder if it was really Rosetta. I've been stopped at Robert and Rozella (Rosetta?) Clapp McClaskey for years... now that I have some dates and names that are actually floating around out there.. I want to just add this to the mix and ask that if anyone out there at all, knows anything about this family.. I'd surely like to know... and so would Mary Francis, my grandmother's 1/2 sister. She doesn't have a computer... so anything I get I will forward to her. Thank you so much!! Regards, PEGGY ROWE - pegrowe@thegrid.net
Posted on: Sullivan County, MO Queries Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Mo/Sullivan/606 Surname: Rule ------------------------- I did a little research in old newspapers last weekend. Of the two major Sullivan Co newspapers, only the Milan Republican has surviving issues for the 1882 time period. I assumed any such hanging would have been a major item. I found nothing to indicate it took place, no news item or obit. March 6 is a little early to plow in northern Missouri, but who knows back then. The weather that week varied a lot. It snowed 2" on Mar 7. Not likely anyone was plowing then. I doubt that any "renegades" were operating late after the war. There was a lot of bad blood in Missouri but I think retributions that late were few and far between.
Brian, As most people will attest, Green Castle is pretty small. Most of the research would be done in Milan at the Sullivan County Library, Courthouse and Historical Museum. There may also be some items in Unionville at the Putnam County Library and on into Kirksville (Adair County). There is a pretty strong oral history amongst the "natives" so I would ask away on here. My dad grew up in that area..actually Pennville and Green City. Not sure how much I can help. What names are you looking for? Marsha Sears Researching: SEARS, PICKERING, PITTMAN, MCCUNE, MCDOWELL, RODGERS, YARDLEY, DEEDS, NEWMAN, NEEDHAM, and many others.
Is there anyone in Sullivan County who could do some research for me in Greencastle MO? Thanks. Bryan S. McDaniel -- Dilestair fid dy hynt, ac ni rusia ddim rhagot. Posted on: Sullivan County, MO Queries Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Mo/Sullivan/570 Surname: Mullins, Smith, Clements, Rogers, Watson ------------------------- Glad you asked, see David's page at my link below or contact me if the link doesn't work (first time I've tried a link). I have a lot of information on the Mullins line and would like to know how you connect to David. My great aunt Ida Rogers TUNNEL was born in 1878 and lived in Reger all her life. She remembered David's murder and her story passed to me from my dad's sister. Her story has it that David was associate constable and tried to arrest brothers Coon and Fletcher FRANKLIN for general rowdiness. When David climbed in a barn loft looking for them, Fletcher shot him in the face. David crawled the mile to Reger and was taken to Milan where he died a week later. Subsequent research indicates the brothers were in David's custody when they escaped and the rest of the story is as before. Coon was captured in Palymra but Fletcher escaped. 15 years later Fletcher was arrested and spent two years in the state pen for horse theft in Linn County. When he was released from prison, he was taken into custody by the Livingston County sheriff. Nothing more is known. Most likely he was never tried for murder. I found an item in 1916 where he sold his farm near Milan and moved away. Apparently he was quite wealthy at the time. I guess crime does pay. Link: David W.
