Warmest Smiles, Pama Headline: DICK BILYEU POW IN WORLD WAR II Publication Date: December 20, 1993 Source: The Sacramento Bee Page: B5 Subjects: Region: Pacific Rim; Northern California Obituary: Mr. Bilyeu, 72, died Thursday in San Francisco. The Delano native was raised in the Ozarks of Missouri. Mr. Bilyeu joined the U.S. armed forces in 1940 and was stationed in the Philippines. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, he was captured by Japanese forces. Mr. Bilyeu survived both the Bataan Death March and many months on a prisoner of war ship in Nagasaki harbor. He witnessed the nuclear bombing there. He also served in the Korean War in 1952. Due to his exposure to many diseases and malnutrition suffered as a POW, Mr. Bilyeu was a fully disabled veteran. He retired from the Signal Depot in Sacramento as a warrant officer in 1961. Mr. Bilyeu was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, the American Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Ex-Prisoners of War Association. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Hattie; daughters, Joyce Wilson of Spokane, Wash., and Sheila Said of Sacramento; sons, Bill Bilyeu of Spokane, Bob Bilyeu of Cameron Park, Jesse Bilyeu III of Fort Bragg, N.C., Charlie Bilyeu of Tinker, Okla., and Matt Bilyeu of Sacramento; sisters, Billie Mathews of Branson, Miss., and Wanda Holmes of Orangevale; a brother, Stanley Bilyeu of Orangevale; numerous grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
