This little-known database is available for free until 11/24 at http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/inddbs/4996.htm It is a listing of just the officers and sergeant instructors of the National Guard for all of the states and the District of Columbia, Hawaii, Alaska, and Puerto Rico in 1925, but it might be helpful in locating families around the time of the 1890 federal census, which for all practical purposes is not extant. Birth dates of these men range from 1862 through 1904, but about half of these soldiers were born between 1885 and 1895. Who knows, you might get lucky and find that missing link here.
