Here are the descriptions from a collector's guide: Stevens No. 15 Crack Shot Single Shot Rifle..............value $175 Single shot. Calibers: 22, 25, 32, 38, and 44RF; also 25, 32, 38 and 44 centerfire. Barrel: 24, 26, 28, and 30 inches; octagonal. Weight: 6 1/2 to 8 3/4 pounds. Sights: Lymon ivory bead front sight and Lyman combination rear site on tang. Plain straight stock and forend. Made from 1900 to 1938. Stevens No. 16 Crack Shot Single Shot Rifle................. value $165 Rolling-block action. Takedown. Calibers: 22 and 32 rimfire. Barrel: 20 inches, round. Weight: 3 3/4 pounds. Blade front sight and dovetail non-adjustable rear sight on barrel. made from 1900 to 1913. The octagonal vs round barrel should tell which model it is. My guess, if you found the barrel alone with no other surviving metal parts nearby, is that it may have been the model 16 "takedown" model. For some additional trivia on Stevens, in case you are interested: J. Stevens Arms & Tool Co., Chicopee Falls, Mass. Joshua Stevens started out as a toolmaker in Chester, Mass., his home town, then went to work for Cyrus Allen, a gunmaker in Springfield, Mass. For a short time he was employed by a small arms manufacturer in Hartford, CT. before moving to Chicopee Falls, where he began working for the Massachusetts Arms Company. At age 50, after receiving a patent on a simple breech-loading single shot pistol, Stevens decided to start his own arms making business, J. Stevens & Co. The first plant was located in a converted grist mill along the Chicopee River and produced a small single shot pistol in pocket and vest pocket models, based on Stevens' patent of September 6, 1864. It also turned out precision machinist's tools, which probably kept the company afloat in its early days. In 1886, the company was incorporated as the J. Stevens Arms & Tool Company. By this time, Stevens was building target rifles and introduced many new cartridges to the shooting fraternity of a century or more ago. Of the Stevens rifle series, the Old Model Pocket rifles were among the first. These rifles were very light in weight (and strength) and eventually were followed by the heavier target rifles. The firm manufactured the Stevens Tip-Up or "Favorite" 22 single shot rifle, a popular arm of the day. All of the Stevens rifles are choice among today's collectors. Joshua Stevens remained with the firm until 1896 when he sold his interests in the business. The J. Stevens Arms & Tool Company became a subsidiary of Savage Arms in 1936. Hope this helps.
