The Stone County Historical/Genealogical Society, over the past year, has taken on the task of locating, attempting the restoration and preservation and marking of isolated graves and local cemeteries. This is an article that we put in the Crane Chronicle on February 3, 2000: "The Stone County Historical/Genealogical Society has had several calls and inquiries regarding the Gentry Cemetery which is located one and one-quarter miles east of Galena on Railey Creek. Concern has been expressed particularly because of the excavation presently taking place on the property. A member of the Society recently met with the present owner of the property and the owner says he is aware of the general location of the cemetery. He is very receptive to further research to specifically locate the graves. He is also receptive to the fencing in of the area once the graves are located." We did receive some response to this article but no actual help in grave location nor with fencing. Lois W Watkins watkins@inter-linc.net
After reading Lois Watkins' message concerning the Gentry cemetery, thought I'd mention another isolated cemetery. The Lee's Cemetery, near Ponce de Leon. Calvin Cloud and many of his family are buried there. When I was there a couple of years ago, it was in terrible shape. I understand a disagreement later took place between the current owner and another nearby landowner who miscalculated easement rights and apparently wanted to bulldoze/plow--something destructive--right past and maybe through the cemetery. Haven't been back to see what happened, but don't believe the displacement took place. Imagine the cemetery is still topsy-turvy. It is such a historical landmark! Anyone who knows the Alf Bolin story would be thrilled to visit this eerie and beautiful locale. Am wondering if anyone is interested in helping to clean up the Lee Cemetery? Cheri Lungstrum P.S. There's also another cemetery--too lazy to look up name, think it's called Pleasant View--down by the Silver Spring/Kimberlin Mill Site that's not nearly as bad as the Lee's Cemetery, but could use a little sprucing up. It has the most beautiful peonies I've ever seen. The little white church next to it is where Jim Bakker's brother used to preach.
