Just for special interest, I was reading in the October 2000 WildWest Magazine an article on Gunfighters. In this particular article they were discussing the death of California Constable Johnny Powers . Although he wasn't from our area of research ... the story about the mysterious disappearance of the headstone was rather interesting, and I wonder how many of our family headstones have ended up lost under similar circumstances. Constable Powers body was buried in a tree-shaded Cottage Grove Cemetery. A small white marble headstone was put up . It was ornamented with clasped hands and in the shape of a law officer's badge, it read: In memory of John L. Powers. Died July 3, 1891. Aged 27 yrs 9 mos 6 d's." He was the first lawman killed in Kern County in the line of duty and his name was inscribed on monuments to slain police officers in Bakersfield and in Washington D.C. However the story I wanted to get to was this .... 80 years after he was buried, and after South Fork County (a book) was published several Cottage Grove headstones turned up missing, including Johnny Power's stone. Bob Powers, who was a resident of Kern Valley was very shocked and very angry at what had happened and in the 1990's (through the Kern Valley Historical Society he posted a $1,000 reward for information to Constable Powers headstone whereabouts'. No questions asked. Luckily the very next day a woman called him and the headstone was found. She was met by Bob Powers and a friend, Al Landry, in Twin Oaks and she led them to a shed on her property. Twenty two years had gone by when some vandals had broken the headstone in two near the cement base, and the base was being used as a step into the shed, which was about 40 ft. from the road Bob Powers had driven past a hundred time. The remainder of the stone had been shoved into a space beneath. So the lost headstone was found twenty two years later, mystery was solved. It is now back in the family, and Bob Powers has his peace of mind, finding his lost relation. I guess I wanted to share this, to encourage each of you to not give up ..... sometimes there are happy endings!

Dear List, I remember my grandfather (Glen C. DUNCAN 1909-1986) showing me his high school, senior yearbook. I think my mother may have shown it to me shortly after his death. The graduating class had 4 in it: my grandfather Glen, his twin sister Glena, his cousin Val (all DUNCANs), and someone else who wasn't related. Today, my mother gave me his high school diploma. It says it is from Armo Baptist Academy in Blue Eye, MO. I checked the Stone Co. History books, and I found a mention of the Armo Academy in Vol. II, page 17. It says the Armo was just across the state line in AR. It didn't make it clear when it closed. On Glen's diploma it says Blue Eye, MO in 2 places. What I'm sort of confused about is Blue Eye, MO and Blue Eye, AR. My mother says the school was on the AR side, but because the state line divides the city, Stone County takes care of both sides, so the diploma would read Blue Eye, MO. As a genealogist, I would think that Stone Co takes care of the MO side of Blue Eye and Carroll Co. takes care of the AR side. But if the school was on the AR side, why does the diploma read MO? Also, my mother says that Armo was the only school anywhere near Blue Eye, until they built the new one. She went to the new in 1939. She thinks her Uncle Ronald (Glen's brother) was in the first graduating class from the new school. He was born in 1917, so he should have graduated with the 4th graduating class in 1935. If anyone has any info on Armo Baptist Academy, please email me. I also wonder if the Ronald Duncan listed as principal from 1961-1963 is the same as my Ronald J. Duncan. Guess I should write to him and ask. Thanks, Cheri M. Torrance, CA

Hello MOSTONERS, I have just finished posting 35 new mystery photos sent to us by JoAnn (Cook) Waits. The photographs may be of particular interest to the Seniors on the list since they were taken in the 1930's and 1940's. Three very good ones are of the various classes at Possum Trot/Fairview School. Please have a look and see if you recognize anyone. I received this email from Larry Morgan. What a thoughtful person he is! He could have just thrown this information out. I don't know if anyone on the list knows the Mr. Cleo Craig who died in 1917, but if so the note below is a treasure. Jo -----Original Message----- From: Larry L. Morgan <larginmor@hotmail.com> To: PDUNNE@satx.rr.com <PDUNNE@satx.rr.com> Date: Monday, September 04, 2000 12:22 PM Subject: Stone County Funeral Notice My mother was Cornelia Eliza Fisk, born in Galena on July 20, 1920 to Theodore Parker and Lila Farmer Fisk. Recently, after my father passed away, I found the Fisk family bible as we were sorting various items - my mother having passed away in November of 1994. Inside the bible I found an original copy of a Woodmen of the World Funeral Notice, to wit: Cleo W. Craig died at his home in Galena, Missouri, Thursday, July fifth, nineteen hundred seventeen. Aged twenty-nine years, nine months and eighteen days. Funeral services at the residence of W. D. Craig, Friday, July sixth, at 1:30 o'clock p.m. Conducted by Dr. A. L. McQuary. Interment at Galena Cemetery with services by Galena Camp No. 288, W. O. W. Friends invited. I don't know why this funeral notice was in the family bible, and do not know any relationship that existed with the Fisk family. I did not that the Galena cemetery index on your web page lists Mr. Craig as being buried there, but doesn't have the date of his death. I thought that either your organization, or if family members remain in the area, might be interested in this announcement. Larry L.
