Hello MOSTONERS, There is an interesting account of the Nickerson/White family history in the biography section. The direct URL is: http://www.rootsweb.com/~mostone/biography/nickerson.html We are grateful to Richard White for sending it to us. Jo
What Ellis did your mother marry? I have lots of Ellis in my data as they are our direct line. Do not have any Best, or Hembree but maybe the Ellis could help if we connect. Have you tried Ancestory com.? Let me know today as I go in for Colon cancer surgery Wednesday at 6 am. Mary Ann, the potluck was held yesterday. Sorry you were from out of town and could not be there. The recipes that are in this little cookbook from yesterday are from dishes brought to the potluck yesterday. They bring the dish and the recipe and then some of our people "disappear" for for about an hour and come back with all the recipes printed in a booklet and each family attending receives one. We do have several left and I would be happy to mail one to you for $3.50 (which includes postage)

I don't have anything on the Merritts except that Susan Mary Merritt married Mathew G. Hilton. I have been researching the Hiltons and had not branched out to the Merrits. I had been on crutches for six months to the day with a broken foot but now it is half to 2/3s healed and I can been off of them if I take it easy. I am ready to get back to my old life stile. If you are ever up to Springfield and have the time, stop my T. J. Maxx store and look for up. I am over the jewelry department. I am easy to find. Let me know what you are looking for and send me your address and I can send you some print outs. Oh by the way the rhubarb is raw in the recipe. Dear Elba, I am mailing my check this morning for a copy of the "Old Family Recipes" and hope that I am fortunate enough to be in time to receive one of the copies.. I am the great granddaughter of William and Nancy (Jones) Hembree from Stone County. I have just recently become interested in tracing my family history and plan to make a trip to Stone County with my son sometime next Spring. Could you please tell me the best place to start searching for information? I am also the great granddaughter of Franklin and Elizabeth (Lewis) Best who came from Kentucky to Missouri around 1860 and later moved to Oklahoma. My grandparents, Laura Belle Hembree and Simon Hedge Best were married in Stone County before coming to Oklahoma in the early 1900's. When my mother, Alta Lee (Best) Ellis, passed away in 1993 my siblings and I were rummaging through some of her things and we came upon a small oak recipe box. No one wanted it so one of my sisters suggested that I use it to paint on since I do a lot of painting. It was some time later before I happened to remember the box and when I opened it I was in for a big surprise. It was full of recipes which my grandmother, Laura Belle Hembree Best had collected and some were even in her own handwriting. Needless to say, we were all delighted and I am now making copies for all of my siblings. I would love to have attended the meeting Sunday and share some of them but didn't know about it in time to make arrangements. If there is ever another meeting scheduled perhaps some of my family will be able to attend. I want to also thank you and all of the other people who have worked so diligently to provide information about Missouri. I look forward to any and all information received on the internet. Regards, June Carter

Jeannie, Great to hear from you!!! Iva Merritt was my Great Grandmother. I am looking for info on her husband Fred Pope. Do you have any names of the children living in the Crane area that I could try to contact? Fred Pope and Iva had a son Theron Joseph Pope who had Loren William Pope (my father). My mother and father were divorced when I was very young and I have not had contact with that side of the family but recently I have been told that they have no additional info. Through the internet I was able to find what little info I have on the Merritt line. Thanks for all your help! Hi Toni, The recipe looks wonderful! Is the rhubarb raw or cooked when you put it in this recipe? If it is cooked how do you cook it? So how are things going in Springfield? I haven't e-mailed you in awhile, so I didn't know what was going on. I did find a picture of some of the Hiltons (Merritts) I believe on Barry Co. site but it might have been the Stone Co. one not sure now. It had a picture (small one) that had my Great-GreatGrandmother Susan Merritt Hilton in it. I am still looking to find one of her daughter's - Rachael which is my Great-Grandmother, so if by any chance you run on to one let me know please. Sorry to post such a long reply to (MOESTONE_L) but I don't know how else to handle it. Maybe this will trigger someone else who may have additional Information. Samule Smyth Was My ggrandfather, Martha My ggrandmother. Rebecca E. Smyth was my Grand mother. She Married Jesse Grenberry McGuire My grand father. McGUIRE, JESSE G * SMITH, RACHEL A FEB 27 1887 (Ref. Stone Co Marriages) There a lot of Spelling errors in the *Smyth Name Which I will point out in the following. The Stone Co. Marriages Records Should read. McGUIRE, JESSE G * SMYTH, RACHEL A m. FEB 27 1887 In the 1870 Flat Creek Census She is Refereed to as Rebecca E. age 2 b.Mo. She was Known to my Family as Rachel and is Buried In that name. She Died in 1928 and is buried Schnider Cemetery in Chelsea Rogers Co. Ok. Rachel had Several First Names (like 5 or more) as a kid I knew them but have forgotten them. I do not know when Samuel Smyth Moved to MO. I have found BLM land records in Indiana which indicate His Father had land in Indiana. His Name was also Samuel. Below is BLM record Showing The 1st documented account of Samuel Smyth in Stone Co. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------- Year Surname Given Name (s) County State Page Township 1870 Smyth Samuel Stone Co Mo 124 Flat Creek Township ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------- Note:(See Below) In the 1870 Census Samuel is 45 and Martha was 38 the two children shown, Rebecca E. Age 2 & Jeremiah A 11mo were born late in there life. I do not know Martha's maiden name. One could speculate that one or both could have had a prior Marriage. Samuel could have emigrated from Indiana to some where in MO., Met and Married Martha as her birth place is listed as Mo. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------- Note:(See Below) In the 1880 Census There Was 5 other people living in the house hold (house servant & Farm Labors. Who were these People?? Between the 1870 and 1880 census they must have fallen on hard times As they all disappear, as Well as Son, Jeremiah A.. Jeremiah must have died. In the 1880 Census there is an error The Surname Is Spelled SANETH, Samuel It should read SMYTH, Samuel ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Note:(See Below) In the 1900 Census Samuel Smyth is Shown living with Jesse McGuire & Rachel (his Daughter) and there Family. I have found no additional information on Samuel later than this i.e... death date or where buried. ___________________________________________________________ 1870 Flat Creek 196 90 Smyth Saml 45 In Farmer Martha 38 Mo Rebecca E 2 Mo Jeremiah A 11mo Mo 196 Woody Lydia J 19 Mo House Servant 196 Roberts George 17 Ar Farm Lab Asa F 15 Ar Farm Lab M Susanah 10 Ar Richard 8 Ar ______________________________________________________________ 1880 Flat Creek Census 204 208 SANETH, Samuel W M 55 Farmer IN MD VA ----, Martha W F 48 wife Keeping House MO MO MO ----, Rachell W F 12 daughter At Home MO IN MO NOTE: SANETH, Samuel should read Smyth, Samuel _______________________________________________________________ 1890 Flat Creek Census There is no Census for this period. _______________________________________________________________ 1900 Flat Creek Census 466 135 McGUIRE JESSE HEAD 32 MO RACHIEL WIFE 32 MO ARTIE L DAU 12 MO GENETTA DAU 10 MO HENRY O SON 5 MO MARTHA DAU 1 MO 466 135 *SMITH SAMUEL F-INLAW 77 IN *NOTE: SMITH Samuel Should read Smyth Samuel _________________________________________________________________ Any additional information would be appreciated send to Bob McGuire rambhm@msn.com ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mindvoice" <Mindvoice@email.msn.com> To: <MOSTONE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, December 01, 2000 11:22 AM Subject: [MOSTONE-L] Smyth and other old families > Hello List, > It's been awhile since I've posted! > I have resumed my work on the Old Settlers of Stone Co. and will be > posting queries for many families listed on the early Stone Co census > records. Hello list! Many of you know about my work on tracking our old families of Stone County. Some of you may be new and some may have no idea on earth what I am talking about! Let me explain, beg, plead, and harass all of you for a few minutes, OK? A few years ago while researching my own family, I kept running across families that seemed to intertwine. Within a few months, I found that I was being led in circles because so many of the families seemed to connect. Out of frustration, I began making notes along side of their names on the census records so that I could figure out who was who. Next, I began researching entire families just so that I could figure out which Zebadee SO-N-SO belonged to whom! As you can imagine, over the years I have accumulated thousands of notes, files, etc.. These have all been entered into my computer. Somewhere along the way I fell in love with all the Old Settlers of Stone County and decided to put all my notes to use. I have managed to connect thousands of families, but alas, not all of them. The families I will be posting are ones that I can't seem to locate or get any information on. If you have any information on these households, I would greatly appreciate your help! You will be listed as "source", of course! Thanks for your time! Robin Mindvoice@msn.com http://members.xoom.com/Robid/Page_1.htm http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~biddle/settlers.htm
